It's time to start subtraction with regrouping. These are the 4 strategies I focus on when teaching this concept. My students also create a mini anchor chart to match this one and they keep it their math journal. Elementary students often understand subtraction ONLY as "take away", and it can be very difficult for them to stretch that understanding to include subtraction in order to find a missing part (Part-Part-Whole) or find the difference (how many more). I'm hoping this Anchor Chart is going to help.

If you follow me other places like FB or Instagram, then you have already seen this picture, but I wanted to share where I decided to hang the anchor chart. I put it right next to our door so that when we leave the room for specials, lunch, recess, etc that the students see the anchor chart over and over.
