So, I came up with the idea of ripping 1×2×8 pine in half when I was building my coat rack area.   It ended up costing me half the price for this DIY slat wall design.   If I plan on painting the slats instead of staining them, I use primed pine, which is even cheaper than select pine.   I know lots of people use plywood, but seeing the unfinished edge of plywood bothers me, so I prefer using solid wood."
