Harold being a pushover and Hawley wanting to fight for his ideals are vital aspects of both characters, so I'm very glad that both traits read clearly, and that you found them enjoyable! I'm also grateful that you mentioned that "Harold had always been the sort of person..." part. I wanted to touch upon those very difficult feelings for Harold, without spending too long leaving them in the spotlight. Just like Harold, the Narration is doing its best to not linger on those thoughts for very long, and I'm happy to hear that I got the pacing right with it.
