As for your question: I actually started with the characters and crafted the story around them. I also knew I wanted there to be some sort of mystery aspect (with supernatural elements) so thus, WTS was born. I simply kept reworking stuff over and over until I had (a flimsy excuse) a plot I could work with and then slowly shaped it.
If you're stuck on choosing genders, I'd use the randomize button. I don't have a preference for how I see my characters (and wouldn't want to state so to give players the idea that there is a "canon gender"). From a developer standpoint, however, I give them all they/them pronouns in my head (mostly for coding purposes).
Aww this is such a wonderful comment to receive. I'm so glad you felt so taken by these characters—they live in my head rent free, so knowing they also take up space in other people's thoughts is surreal and so flattering. They're truly my favourite part about writing this. (Also, no plans to abandon this so don't worry <3)
