Thinking about Maysilee Donner. A girl who refused to let the Capitol dehumanize her. A girl who wanted to die with dignity, without begging for her life, because that mattered to her. Who set up a place setting with napkins and forks in the middle of the arena because she is a human being. Who loved jewelry and fashion and believed that her appearance sends a message about who she is, and who wanted that message to be respectable, dignified, worth something.

Thinking about Maysilee Donner who was unafraid to slap the woman who pulled her name in the reaping and who threw clever insults towards anyone who provoked her, no matter who they were. Maysilee Donner who believed human dignity is inherent but respect is earned and who refused to give respect to those who did not deserve it.

Maysilee Donner whose father threw money at the reaping stage as if that could save her, and the money floated to the ground just like the confetti, meaningless paper that signified nothing when placed against the power of the Capitol. Whose privilege could not save her. Who recognized that reality and faced it with more fortitude than any person should ever have to display. Maysilee Donner.

i want to talk about the scene in catching fire where peeta and katniss watch haymitch’s game. when they see the bit with the ax and the force field katniss says something like ‘it’s almost as bad as the berries’ and haymitch says ‘almost but not quite’ THAT READS SO DIFFERENTLY NOW before it was like he was just saying that their stunt was more of an open rebellion but now he’s saying that he did all of the shit he did (and let’s be honest, in his hunger games he did a hell of a lot more than peeta and katniss) and it STILL wasn’t enough and how much he regrets that!!! and how the biggest sign of rebellion to the capitol wasn’t ‘breaking the machine’, but love and unity and strength and the things the tributes didn’t think about too much because it came so naturally I LOVE THE HUNGER GAMES PANEM TODAY PANEM TOMORROW PANEM THE NEXT DAY PANEM THE DAY AFTER THAT-

OH MY GOD AND ALSO he’s probably regretting the fact that he didn’t stay with the newcomers!! if he had and they’d defeated the careers they said they would have a meeting it’s not like they’d decide who would win and kill each other off there might have been a larger scale katniss and peeta berries shenanigan urgh

kinda disappointed about lenore dove because she just felt like lucy grey 2.0 to me. and i wasn’t huge on lucy grey to begin with, she just seemed like a manic pixie dream girl to me but at least she had more development than lenore dove. it irritated me how obsessed haymitch was with her when to me she didn’t have much about her that was that intriguing. i’m not gonna talk about maysilee because i already have they would have made such a good couple and im still upset about it, but i do think that just making lucy gray 2.0 was lazy writing. i think suzanne found the raven poem and went ‘omg! symbolism!’ and that’s fair but the least she could do was make lenore interesting in her own way.

and i want to add - one of the many problems with the manic pixie dream girl is that she doesn’t have any flaws. haymitch being in love with lenore is obvious and lazy writing because she’s flawless, she loves him no matter what, she is kind and optimistic to a fault (and in a way that is never challenged), she’s beautiful, perfect, etc. and we never see her show any unlikable traits. of course he loves her. it’s far more interesting for two people to love each other while recognizing their flaws. take katniss and peeta for example. katniss has plenty of flaws, she’s stubborn and bitter to the point where she can sometimes lash out at the people around her. peeta knows this, was sometimes on the receiving end of it, and loves her because of it. at the end of sotr haymitch says that peeta compares him and katniss sometimes and says they’re very alike, i think in that sense he’s recognizing her flaws. similarly, peeta is optimistic, trusting and kind to the point where he could be seen as some to be ‘weak’ and unable to hold his own, ie his refusal to kill anyone. at first katniss thinks this is naive but comes to see the strength in it and loves him for it. they love each other knowing each others flaws, having seen each other at their worst. we don’t get the same from haymitch and lenore, or from snow and lucy grey frankly. lucy, i would argue, doesn’t even love snow for who he is, but for who she imagines he is, she says he’s ’pure as the driven snow’ but clearly he’s not even at that point in the book. anyway. panem toda-
