In case you were wondering how it's going, JK Rowling has reached the "acephobic" stop of the radicalization pipeline

to the great surprise of absolutely no one

An image about the International Asexuality Day, in a tweet by JK Rowling, reading, "Happy international fake oppression day to everyone who wants complete strangers to know they don't fancy a shag," in a quote-tweet by Thomas Willett, reading, "JK Rowling is vile, and in no way an ally to LGBTQ+ people. Asexual people continue to be persecuted through forced sexualisation. People stigmatise their clothing choices and behaviors which lead to harassment. There’s need for increased visibility and education on this issue."ALT

(and she's so much worse in the comments, fucking hell)

I'm grateful to everyone quote-tweeting her and pointing out all the ways asexuals are, indeed, marginalized and oppressed. As Thomas pointed out, they're lesser-known issues. But as an ace person, I'm more concerned with the way she completely invalidates our identity

This isn't a case of "you aren't oppressed because everyone already accepts your identity" (which we see a lot online), or the usual exclusionism. She's saying we don't have an identity to oppress. This is why she doesn't see posting hate against asexual people on international asexuality day as oppression (or, you know. wrong). The thousands of bigoted comments under her post aren't proof that people do, actually, discriminate against aces: she agrees with them, and is there riling them up.

As someone also pointed out, mocking people for not wanting sex isn't very I'm-only-protecting-women of her

I've been reporting terfs and the like on Pinterest (where they, sometimes, actually do something about it) and ace/arophobia is never far. It just got more obvious

Early-Spring Apartment Gardening

(How to Grow Plants with Limited Space and with Recycled Materials AND Get an Early Start)

Hey, so obviously, this isn't a zine. I will turn it into one soon, but in the meantime, have a step-by-step post with instructions!

What You Need:

  • One Gallon Jugs (1 for each plant you want to grow)
  • Cheesecloth or Other Flexible Mesh/Permeable Material
  • Rocks
  • Soil
  • Zip-ties or Rope or Paracord/Etc
  • Somewhere to hang the planters

STEP ONE: Your Vertical Space

image

You need something that has both vertical and horizontal bars to it or a lattice. You can use pretty much anything, but it needs to be sturdy enough to hold a lot of weight without bowing. I have attached this wooden frame to my apartment's balcony rail with zip-ties. Make sure it's securely attached to wherever you place it. I gave mine a good jiggle, and it didn't move. You can place this indoors or outdoors depending on your space, but make sure it will get enough lighting for whatever you want to grow.

(Also, mine is short, because I didn't need a ton of extra space, but as long as it is sturdy, you can go as tall as you'd like to maximize your space.)

Step Two: Prepare Your Planters (AKA Your 1-Gallon Jugs)

image
image

Take your 1-Gallon Jugs (mine are water jugs; if you use milk jugs, make sure to thoroughly wash them). Cut the bottom off, leaving a one-inch portion uncut on the corner with the handle (IMPORTANT!). If you cut it so that a different corner is the hinge, it will make your gardening more difficult later, working around the lid. If you leave the hinge-point smaller, it's more likely to fall off. If you leave the hinge-point bigger, it's harder to use the lid.

(If you are planting indoors only, you can fully remove the bottom. The lid is for early-spring outdoor gardening.)

STEP THREE: Attach Your Planters

image
image

We are installing the jug UPSIDE DOWN. Take your first tie and attach the BOTTOM of the handle (AKA the top of the jug) first. (It is harder to do the top first!) Make sure to leave it loose so you have room to attach the top one, THEN tighten both. You want the bottom to be on one side of a horizontal slat, and the top to be on the other, so it won't slide around or up/down.

image

^ This is how your jug should sit.

STEP FOUR: Filling the Planter

image
image

First, while the cap is on the jug, place two layers of 12"x12" cheesecloth in the bottom of the jug. (You can substitute for any sort of flexible mesh/permeable material. If you are growing produce, make sure it is food safe material.) It doesn't have to be put in perfectly, but it needs to cover the cap's opening and go up the sides a couple inches.

Next, put a large-ish handful of small rocks/pebbles inside over the cheesecloth. This is your drainage layer. The cheesecloth prevents the rocks from falling out when you take the cap off.

You can drill/poke small drainage holes in the jug instead of this step, but if you are growing inside or can't have your planters randomly dripping (like me), then this is a good alternative!

image

Last, fill the rest of the jug about 3/4ths with soil. Whatever mix you want to use is fine. I've got a 2-1 mix of potting soil and manure, but whatever you prefer works. The jug tilts forward a little so just level the soil with your hand.

STEP FIVE: Growing Your Plants

Plant whatever you want in here! Herbs are great for small containers. So are things like lettuces, bush beans, spinach, radishes, and more. Many towns have seed exchanges or seed libraries, so you can get your seeds for free, too.

The nice thing about these jugs is the lid allows you to plant outside much earlier in the year than you would be able to otherwise. They become mini-greenhouses when you fold the lid down!

image

The lid traps in heat and moisture for your plants in the early months of spring, allowing you to start some/all of your plants outdoors in February-March.

And now my floor space is freed up for additional planters, like my 5-gallon buckets where I'm going to grow produce that requires more room!
