A study led by G. Waddington on ankle sprains and mobility proved that modern footwear makes it increasingly easy to injure our ankles. His research showed that: The ability to detect inversion moments (the ankle rolling or starting to roll) was much faster when barefoot vs. when in shoes. Detection of ankle inversion was also faster when using a textured footbed (that stimulated the nerves on the bottom of the foot) compared to just wearing shoes. The conclusion was that skin stretch texture and pressure are all picked up from the ground (through nerves in the sole of the foot) and tell the foot and ankle where it is in space. When wearing shoes this sensory information is not picked up and we have to rely on other mechanisms to detect ankle movement (the stretch of muscles tendons and ligaments) which are much slower and may only kick in when it is too late to prevent the sprain from happening. Bottom line: ditch the shoes Wisdom from @thefootcollective . . . . #shoes #footwear #anklesprain #ankle #anklebreaker #injury #injuryfree #injuryprevention #sports #athletes #footcare #barefoot #barefoottraining #running #physicaltherapy #healthyfeet #balance #reactiontime #tfc #ankleinjury #rehab #mobility #nerves #foothealth #strongfeet #earthrunners #barefootsandals Ankle Sprain Recovery, Lisfranc Injury, Earth Runners, Ankle Ligaments, Ankle Fracture, Gi Health, Twisted Ankle, Ankle Sprain, Hip Fracture
