While the common misconception is that the spear was a throwing weapon, this was probably quite rare given the spear was most likely a man’s primary weapon, he wouldn’t want to throw it away during the first seconds of the battle! It was said that Odin threw his spear over the heads of his enemies during the First Battle of the World, which is thought to have given way to the tradition of doing the same either before battles or during Viking sporting events, either literally or symbolically.
