Upcycling pine furniture doesn't have to be tricky. This was my very first time giving it a go with chalk paint and the results were fab!

Don't you just love those pictures of vintage suitcases stacked one on top of the other. There’s just something about the look that makes me think of a life well-traveled and filled with adventure and I really wanted my own stack of suitcases sooo badly. But they’re so hard to find and terribly expensive. We needed to make another plan. And the plan involved this boring pine chest of drawers. And a whole bunch of broken suitcases ......... Here’s how I did it:
+ stripped the entire piece (this makes sanding a BREEZE)
+ lightly sanded with 220 to smooth/even
+ added my favorite tan wash (1:1 ratio tan paint to water, I used a sample of rustic taupe by Benjamin Moore)
+ apply and wipe off
+ lightly sand with 400 to smooth
+ apply top coat for durability

I know some of us at Apartment Therapy have strong views on painting wooden furniture, particularly (gasp!) painting it white, but sometimes it’s gotta be done. This bedside table belongs to my flatmate/landlord, left behind by some long-ago tenant. We both agreed that the knotty pine was an eyesore, and that for the benefit of future tenants, giving it a makeover with a lick of white paint was the best thing we could do.
