Here are some answers to popular questions I’ve gotten over the years about this technique: Why do I do this? Well if you’re an artist, you know already that it’s common practice to do a solid color on the canvas as a base coat. It can be called a couple different things depending on the technique used, such as “imprimatura” when the paint acts more like a stain. This is my version of a base layer, and this technique kicks off my painting process in a rather satisfying way. Why so I use so much paint? There’s a reason for that too - I’m not wasting paint for the fun of it. This base layer is pivotal to set the tone for the entire piece, so it’s usually the part of a painting where I feel the most pressure. I build all layers upon this layer and use the colors as a guide for the entire piece. It’s always relieving when it comes out how I want, and in this case - even better! The way the orange cuts through the sky just turned out incredible. Stay tuned for more updates as I work on this piece throughout the week! Victoria Barnhill on Instagram: "🌹 Wait for the end reveal! This loose style of painting is my favorite way to paint, due to the freedom found in expression through paint. Trained as a realist classic oil painter, this style captured my heart when I found joy in painting again after being bound so tightly to a style I truly didn’t enjoy. It taught me to actually create instead of just recreate; something I was never taught in art school. It all started with me creating a piece I hated, and in a moment of frustration I put down the paint brush, picked up my palette knife and swiped the entire painting from top to bottom to start over - and it left the most beautiful color smear and texture on the canvas. In an instant, the trajectory of my artwork was changed.
