Aries- Anger and selfishness can be at the heart of an Aries at their worst. While I know that’s all you may hear about Aries, it is for good reason. On one side is passion and the other wrath. They can be careless and impulsive with their comments and actions. Their passion in love can be a string to passion in hate. Of course they are known for getting over issues quickly, but don’t underestimate the damage their explosions can cause. While not a grudge-holder this is a sign connected to war, the desire to conquer, win, or to get rid of an obstacle can keep their fire lit. Aries can be selfish, a me - me - me attitude can drive other’s away. Typically I reassure with words of Aries being just as generous as they are self-focused along with informing people that selfishness is NOT always a bad thing. BUT I want to look as their selfishness combined with ambition. Many times Capricorn is a sign talked about with ambition + ruthlessness but with Aries ego, their self-focus, and ambition they can have a ruthless side as well. Maybe not calculated or cold but quick, burning, thoughtless, immediate, destructive in their own right. Capricorn will plot your demise, Aries will attack on the front end with comments putting you down, attempts to one up, or even a shouting match.
Taurus- Intolerance and the using of others can be part of the worst version of Taurus. Taurus is more known for stubbornness than dogma, but a Taurus can become so wrapped up in their own ideas, habits, and knowledge that they can breed intolerance. A resistance to change may be a place to look at this negative side. Taurus is considered a peaceful sign, they have a focus on the tangible. This is not always an issue of pride or entitlement but of an unmoving character possibly being fed by ignorance. A Taurus at their worst can use others, they take what they need then toss that individual aside. Remember their possessive side, their practical side when turned negative could produce this. Their drive for security can tempt them to use but also sometimes attach to those not good for them. This can play into the value and self-worth many times connected to this sign and even claimed to be one of their big life lessons. Our values evolve over time and with the Taurus archetype this is emphasized. A Taurus can find value and security on the surface or by gaining this from relationships in a one-sided manner. On a positive note, Taurus can also highly value that of good quality and this means deep bonds, mutual attention and love, and healthy attachment.
Gemini- Let’s talk about shallowness, some irresponsibility, and their “trickster” reputation. Gemini, and honestly the air element, can have a reputation for being “shallow”. Before thinking they only care about looks than brains - they are also intellectually oriented. So really they probably do highly care about someone’s mind and wit. But Air can find it hard to understand, express, and process their feelings. From this they can find it hard to make closer, emotional bonds. This is where the “shallowness” comes in. A possible insensitivity can be displayed by a Gemini who hasn’t tapped into their emotional well-being, understanding, and expression. Gemini can struggle with a lack of focus and from this can become highly irresponsible and scattered. This combined with “shallowness” means they might not take responsibility for their downfalls or mistakes, they could avoid conflict, reality, or whatever clashes with them. Let’s talk about their trickster, instigator, trouble-maker reputation. First let’s debunk a few things. 1. Gemini has an incredibly open mind and is willing to change their mind with new information. This can mislabel them as tricky, flaky, unstable. 2. They are opinionated and some tempted into debates which could give a disloyal impression depending on the situation. BUT I am not going to say the trickster label is totally wrong. Gemini is highly persuasive and at their worst can plot against others. A negative Gemini is the type to steal girlfriends/boyfriends, will turn friends on each other, and may hurt those who are just trying to get close to them. Some books will claim this is out of boredom. That is pretty “damning” and we should consider more than that Gemini is just looking for drama. From Judy Hall’s book, “motivation can be a reaction to stupidity or a sense of being snubbed.” I would also say Gemini can be a trickster because they are paranoid that others want something from them or are out to hurt them. A secure Gemini is likely to become more trustworthy and grow out of this behavior.
Cancer- Manipulation, emotional biases, and possessiveness is at the core of Cancer’s negative side. Guilt tripping can be part of this, gaslighting, playing emotional games, and distributing destructive criticism. The water element can be good at manipulation and I don’t always write about manipulation as a strictly bad thing, it is nothing more than a tool. There’s many ways to manipulate but Cancer is also known for being passive aggressive. So when you confront them you may cause more aggression and resentment. This isn’t to say a Cancer behaving like this should not be called out. But it is a challenge to break away from their manipulation or bring it to light.Cancer is a possessive sign and one that very easily gets wrapped up in their own emotional ideas and prejudices. From all this you may see things like hinting to you that a mutual friend is upset with you or does not like you. There can be attempts at isolation or igniting self-doubt in someone they are close to. Many times this comes from Cancer afraid to lose someone. Their nature is to cling, to attach, and to smother and this can become corrupt with fear and insecurity. Reassurance is so important to this sign! Their manipulative or hostile side could come out when they have misjudged another or refuse to move on from a grudge. Here we can see how they can act negatively both towards loved ones and those who aren’t necessarily in their inner circle. This is a sympathetic and protective sign that will jump to defend others. But this means they can get attached to one side of a fight. Sometimes they root for the vulnerable, other times they may be misled into rooting for the villains, those who just don’t need their support, or going against those that are actually vulnerable or are misunderstood. Letting go and seeing the other side of a situation is important for this sign to learn and experience. Understanding is actually a big strength for them. They have an ability to deeply understand human nature and respect or be kind to most, relating to others on an emotional and creative level.
Leo- Bossy, arrogance, selfishness, the bad reputation of the “ego”, is likely what you hear about Leo’s negative side. The big ego, the authoritative king or queen, the primadonna. First Leo and really fire is strongly connected to the self, to putting self needs first, to self expression, and to self-esteem. All things that are important and not always negative. Leo is fire in its most fixed form, meaning it is unmovable so you get the possibility of having a big ego and being wrapped up in their own wants, needs, and agenda. Many times they can be unaware to this side of them. There honestly can be an innocence to this, but sometimes not. The lion is the king of the jungle after all and this is represented in the Leo archetype. Leo is ambitious and recognition is important to them. They want to be seen as who they really are OR who they want to be. Sometimes their need to be recognized and ambition is funneled into creativity and self-expression. Other times it is funneled into power and influence. From politics to the stage - they will get noticed and they will become “the ruler” somehow. To look at this on a smaller scale this can just mean being bossy in the home . It can also mean the full scale of trying to lead and be placed in a real position of influence. In the “Definitive Guide to the Zodiac”, the author speaks to Leo’s impulse to “lord over others”. Mentions a more introverted side effect of all this is that Leo can easily fall prey to false praise and people boosting their ego. A part of them that is vulnerable. Something to think about when talking about the negatives.
Virgo- Having a “I told you so” or “know-it-all” attitude, judgment, and even being a hustler can be the negative side of Virgo. Virgo is associated with criticism, which at its best can be constructive criticism or healthy discernment, but at its worst it is self-doubt, a closed mind, judgment, and put downs. They are also a sign who is intellectual, is communicative, and is a perfectionist. All of this can breed a “know-it-all” type of attitude. At the extreme this can form snobbery or even elitism. They are a worrier and can have a high-strung energy and I will say many times a Virgo’s good intentions of trying to help or improve can be misinterpreted because of this. Virgo can be a very caring sign and has a drive to serve and help. Sometimes they just need a wake up call to how they are being perceived. The hustler? Yes, on the positive “hustler” as in a hard worker, but on the negative, a “hustler” as in trickery, over practicality, and materialism. Virgo is actually known for honesty but they can use their cleverness to take from others and bend the rules for their favor, especially if it is for a practical gain. Virgo can fall into the pattern of constantly bargaining for things, even love. They may feel as if everything has some sort of price, like no one can love them for just being them and they can’t do the same. When it comes to more “emotional” hustling or trickery this could come from a part of Virgo that believes “this is too good to be true”. Their inner critic can be skeptical of other’s feelings and/or their own worth, as if they don’t measure up for another. However when a Virgo is feeling like this, they are more likely to leave a relationship or reject someone than try to use them or gain something from them. The hustling side really comes from the Earth element, when it turns corrupt. Virgo is then focused on selfish, material gain and has intellect, attention to detail, and flexibility to their advantage.
Libra- How do I word the dishonest side of Libra without straight up calling them a liar? Because that really wouldn’t totally be correct. The way I am wording this also aligns with the deceptive and elusive side of the sign. Competition, believe it or not, especially in terms of relationships is also at the heart of Libra’s worst side. Libra is famous for their objectivity and their fairness. From this comes a tendency to never take sides. This can be misunderstood as being dishonest, cowardly, or disloyal. Beyond misunderstandings is still a side of them that can fear making decisions. It is in their nature to weigh every decision, side, and outcome. There is also a fear of conflict. Libra is known as a people pleaser. From all 3 can make a dishonest or deceptive character. No one is excused from selfishness, even if the fire signs are more known for it. Libra goes about their selfish wants usually in a quieter way. They tip toe, persuade, charm, and evade. Competitive? Libra is known for the opposite - cooperation, team work, levelheadedness, and fairness. But Libra is a cardinal sign meaning they like to lead and take action. Libra does this in the social realm and many times in terms of relationships. Libra can seem passive and reactive but their desire for connection, to be complemented or whole, for partnership, and even for adoration makes them want to be the one you seek after, the one you want to be with. This Libra goes after lovers, friends, whoever just to have another notch on their belt. They choose a target and win them over just to see if they can. They use whatever they can to gain a person’s approval and love and then use whatever they can to leave them once they are done. Yes, the negative Libra is the person collecting people’s hearts. In a way this reflects the conquest trait of their polar opposite, Aries. But ultimately Libra is looking for love and a partner. They are also a sign who is a peacemaker and can learn turn down competitiveness, even in the social realm.
Scorpio- You likely have heard a lot of “negativity” about Scorpio. Ex: Jealous, controlling, possessive, power hungry, manipulative, vindictive, etc. Being a sign of extremes this can mean extreme “bad” but also extreme “good”. With that said I wanted to look at their vindictive side but also harsh generalizations. Manipulation can certainly be a powerful weapon they wield, but a stubbornness exist in their emotionally choppy waters that gives to their worst of the worst… self-destruction. Scorpio is a water sign which = emotions. A fixed sign which can mean fixed in emotions. A Scorpio could be hurt by a lover, let’s say cheated on and then assume that all men/women/or people like them are cheaters or are untrustworthy. Scorpio can be vengeful when hurt and can never give another person the benefit of the doubt because of that tendency. Scorpio can isolate themselves or stop relationships too soon because of this. I haven’t seen many talk about the “power hungry” side of Scorpio as much anymore online. There are some that believe the source of this comes from a lack of power or feeling powerless early on in life. Other’s cite a desire to understand the universe and people on a deep level and therefore also understand the self and master the self. “Power” in this sense is more abstract and internal. Some point to control issues. Although control and a desire for actual influence isn’t always the same thing. Some think this is a misinterpretation of “powerful feelings” or from the passion associated with the sign. I want all popular theories to be known. Wrapping a desire for power and their skill for manipulation can make a dangerous person. Some like to label Scorpio as the “puppet master” (side note I’ve seen arguments for other water signs to have this title). If we rule out a desire for power as just their depth and passion, we can’t deny a will that tends to be put onto others. Even if the feelings, messages, or action are not intentional they are a stifling force that is always challenging, compelling, or even invading. This “will” doesn’t always have to be looked at as a negative, but when talking about “their worst”, I hope this paints a picture.
Sagittarius- Over promise, unreliability or untrustworthy, and the zealot. A Sagittarius can over extend themselves and over promise things that they can’t return or do or live up to. This sign has a relationship with both truth and embellishment, exaggeration, and boasting. A coin with both sides. While Gemini has the reputation for spreading themselves thin, Sagittarius has this flaw too. Beyond a flaw is impulsiveness, recklessness, and a desire to expand that contributes even more to broken promises or unreliability. They leap before they look and not pay attention to detail or what matters. Sagittarius can be associated with the “con man”. Where as Gemini tricks with a slight of hand and crafty words, Sagittarius bolsters and boosts, making things sound grander or better than they are. When focused on selfish gain this shadier side comes out. When concentrating on unreliability or being irresponsible some say this is a corrupted version of Sagittarius’s desire for freedom and possibly an over zealous rebellious side. They run too fast and too far, burning bridges as they go. Learning caution and patience is useful along with appreciating those close to them. Then there is the zealot, which most think of a religious zealot. Sagittarius is tied to morals and religion but remember to look beyond that. This can be someone on the positive who openly shows enthusiasm for their political stances or life philosophy - helping others understand their stance, being a good teacher. On the negative someone extreme or fanatical in their beliefs. Along with this can also come self-righteousness. Another contrasting part of the Sagittarius archetype is it is associated with both an open mind and a fiery campaigner for beliefs. They can be exploratory but then bigoted. Can get carried away with an idea or embark on a quest for meaning.
Capricorn- Suppression, control, authority, and dare I say tyrant. Capricorn is an adaptable sign but a cardinal one. This means they take action and leadership. Their action is calculated and thought out. Being an Earth sign there is a huge need for security and stability. This can create quite the “controlling” formula. They control not out of a desire for power but fear of what could happen when things are not under control. Overcoming fear of the unknown, fear of losing control, and fear of instability or addressing instability within the self are important. Authority also is a dark side for Capricorn. Sometimes in a chart this is indicating suffering from other’s authority and therefore trying to gain self-authority. Through that association is the chance of becoming over authoritative or tyrant-like. The sign in general is connected to wanting status and a good reputation, which is a good mask and tool when you are trying to enforce. Sometimes wanting power is rooted in their desire for status. Many times it is rooted in that need for security and stability. Sometimes it is both. Emotional suppression. Capricorn is NOT detached. They understand their emotions and they certainly feel their emotions. A Capricorn just like anyone else can be sensitive, deep, and imaginative however unlike others they completely bury all that deep down and refuse to express such things. This can lead to obsessive behavior - typically accompanied by frustration or not feeling understood, random outlashes, a feeling of loneliness, and makes it hard to connect with them. Inner dissatisfaction and an emotional nature that is usually “blocked” is something to overcome. While this “at their worst” sounds more internal - it is an internal issue that usually influences those in their lives greatly. Not only can this cause a lack of expression but a lack of accepting and understanding how important our emotions are.
Aquarius- Hypocrisy, apathy or being uncaring, controlling, and chaos. Some of these may sound surprising or confusing, and that almost makes sense with the twister-like sign. A negative Aquarius can say they believe in the freedom for all and that everyone has a right to express their opinion but when someone may say something they disagree with they’ll go off on how that belief is wrong. This can come from “fixed air’. A stubborn mentality in ideas and opinions. Hypocrisy could have roots from their own inner chaos. Some quotes that might help explain the “chaos” I’m trying to describe:
“Seen as detached, in actuality Aquarius has chaotic and conflicting emotional needs. Routine and stability are craved and yet, Aquarius can feel stifled in commitment. When the sign’s perfectionist streak comes into play, it inevitably finds this mess of emotions wanting. Therefore has an enormous problem with intimacy.”“At an extreme of this sign, the desire for change can rule to the detriment of everything else.”“Aquarius can be cold, rigid, and disapproving, a perfectionist craving control, which it may achieve through anarchy. [Aquarius can be] unconventional and perverse. Doing this simply for the sake of being different. Sometimes psychotic, the shadow figure aspires to anarchy and annihilation.” All from ‘The Definitive Guide of the Zodiac’.
Some point to Saturn being traditionally the ruler of Aquarius and more modern seen as a co-ruler for their controlling side. Separating planet from sign you can also look at the fixed nature. They can hold a mental picture of how things should be and find it hard to let go of this. Aquarius is known for “caring for the group but not always the individual”. Yes they can be a humanitarian, they can be kind. On the darker side of the archetype is the ability to ignore the individual or to not care. Not to be confused with their important connection to individualism. On the positive Aquarius cares about society and the collective while appreciating individuality and self-expression and campaigning for its importance. On the negative Aquarius is aloof and apathetic to both the issues of people and of society. Or on the negative Aquarius can put too much focus on either, ignoring or trivializing the other.Pisces- Playing the victim, vagueness, and possibly irresponsibility or flakiness is usually talked about in the negativity of Pisces. Many talk about how Pisces can hurt themselves but not so much how they can harm others. The manipulative side and honestly destructive nature water can have is something people seem to forget when talking about Pisces. And I am hinting to the physical world of how dangerous water can really be. They are perceptive, intuitive, and the one you least expect. Pisces bends instead of breaks and can be like water shaping a canyon. Subtly carving out over time to gain or to destroy. They usually manipulate with elusiveness, confusion, playing savor, playing victim, or with guilt. They can see into your soul for good or bad. They can feel familiar and safe. For a reason that is hard to pin down you always need their help, it is always “your fault”, They can be mist, sticky tar, quick sand, drowning. Their famous “no boundaries” certainly is harmful to themselves but to others it can become a battlefield of unfairness, warped reality, dependency, and blame. Pisces is known for doing many things unintentionally. “Pisces often casts itself as victim, and excels at passive aggressive behavior. Rather than displease someone, they will take on tasks with no intention of fulfilling them, or make promises lightly only to break them almost immediately. One side of this personality is kindness personified, the other is passively manipulative.” - Judy Hall. It is more likely Pisces needs more self-awareness, a reality check, an outsider’s view - but this is a flaw to work on. For a Pisces who consciously decides to act on selfish or malicious intent is a dangerous and sly enemy or villain.
