Just announced: on 1 June, I’m introducing an extraordinarily rare screening of Daiei’s The Whale God as part of Forbidden Worlds Film Festival at the Bristol Megascreen! This represents the first time the film has EVER screened in the UK, and may well be the film’s first theatrical screening in ANY English-language territory in over SIXTY YEARS. Here’s some news: I’m writing a book on Ishiro Honda’s original Godzilla! It’s part of the BFI Film Classics range and will be published by Bloomsbury in 2027.

Kaiju-Eiga International Resurgence (2013 - Present)
A period during which the production of new, high-profile, studio-led kaiju features reaches an unprecedented high for the first time since the 1960s, with the genre encompassing non-Japanese films and taking on a much broader international definition. The genre’s influence is recognised and acknowledged more commonly in the Western world, and the term “kaiju” finally enters the general vernacular worldwide.
