Half Way Done

I can’t believe the New York Beauty has been taking so long to quilt.  I can tell I have really slowed down but also the batiks are harder than usual for me to quilt through – possibly a combination of the fabric and my hands getting worse.  I will just keep on going with it.  The quilt is half way done and it has taken me 95 hours so far to do it.  I started it on the frame January 19th.

This is the half way done point on the quilt (I wasn’t watching bowling but someone of the show I was watching was bowling)

I had finished the crosshatching on the right side shortly before this photo

IMG_7223

Then I had rolled it down and started the middle while I was finishing an episode of a weird show called “The Tourist

On Tuesday afternoon I got all my houseplants moved outside to the porch and sprayed them all down to get a winter’s worth of dust off of them.   I will do that off and on in the summer too while outside – I think they love a good spray.  I like to take a photo of them to see how much they grow before I take them back in in October.

Only this much applique got done yesterday – The dentist office had called early Wednesday morning to reschedule and could get me in Thursday morning so I went.  I hadn’t really felt that great all day though as I hadn’t slept well at all on Wednesday night and was tired all day and even took a nap.  Hope to finish the purple piece today and maybe get started on the next one  – we will see.

Dresden Plates and Quilting

I decided to glue baste the half plates down on the top and lower borders for Sunny Daze and then machine sew those two borders in place – then I need to get the correct measurement of the sides for the side borders before I get those six plates glue basted down.  I do have the red plate appliqued in place for the lower border.  I thought I took a photo of the 2 shorter borders while I was working on them yesterday afternoon but I hadn’t but here is the one I was working on last night while the news was one.

IMG_7213

From New York Beauty quilting from Tuesday night I got done with a bit – this block is finished

IMG_7220

And this one

IMG_7221

Now it was on to the side which was partially done and this is where I picked up last night.

IMG_7222

The strawberries are growing like mad.  This is the fullest bed – the only one that didn’t get thinned out last fall.   I ran out of time and the cold had come.  You can see if it covered in blossoms – I have a lot of green berries all over the place.  And scattered about on the pathways are stray plants here and there.  After the berries ripen from them I will dig them up and put in the beds.

IMG_7215

Here are a couple more of the beds that had been thinned out last year.

IMG_7216

This is the last variety of daffodils I believe

IMG_7219

And the iris’s are started

IMG_7217

One of the butterfly weeds is coming up – I have quite a few – this one had been growing in with the blueberries and I managed to get it out.

IMG_7214

Every now and then I will mention how little the lizards are that run around on the porch and garden and I have had some of you thing they are pretty big – I zoom in for the photos normally – so this one I didn’t so you could see how little they actually are – sometimes only a 3 inches long or so but most are 4-5 inches  I circled it in blue – I was sitting on the chair

Ready for the Borders

I finished getting the half Dresden Plates ready for the borders.  All in pinned in place last night so I could look at it before I start to get the borders ready for stitching.  The top and bottom borders ended up just a little short so I need to add a piece to each end which is ok because they have several pieces in them.  After I do that I will glue baste one border at a time and then bring one at a time to applique in place.  It will be a week or two before I am ready to machine stitch the borders in place although I might do that as I finish them anyhow.

This is the color arrangement I decided on

Quilting on New York Beauty from Monday night

IMG_7208

Due to a semi-truck having an accident in the area that my dentist office is my appointment was canceled.  Power was out to a major section of town!  And it was out for hours from about 1 in the afternoon and not expected back until late last night – took out a pole from what I heard  – glad they were able to get in touch before I left the house – now they need to call me back this morning to reschedule – just a cleaning so no rush.  I got my plant bulbs planted instead.

Is anyone getting spam email from me like I am getting from some of you. It will have an email address on it from one of the people who frequently comment on my blog but I can tell it is not them and I do not respond – I am wondering if anyone is getting the same from who they might think is me – in all of them it says “Hello , How are you? Hope you’re doing well and enjoying life! Just checking if you are staying safe and stay healthy”  I know this is spam the text is identical and I know the bloggers (several) well enough to know they don’t send notes like this.  I am just sending them to trash.  If you are getting anything like this from me – it is not me – just trash it I don’t know what else to do with them.

Piecing

Yesterday I got a little more piecing done and hope to get more done on the Dresden’s today but I have a dentist appointment (just a cleaning not work) and a few errands to run so who knows.  Two more of the half Dresden plates to stitch and then get the half circle in place.  All of the blades are pressed and ready to have stitching finished.

IMG_7203

This part of New York Beauty was quilted on Sunday night.  Back over to the center last night to continue working my way over to the side.

IMG_7204

I mentioned bulbs to plant – I have these – 3 orange Canna, 3 speckled Canna and 2 packages of yellow Hollyhock roots – I had wanted to find multicolored but this was l they had.  I will keep an eye out for more.  Sometimes the Canna come back and other times they don’t – they are annuals – I had some a long time ago and all of a sudden they were gone –I never checked to see if the bulbs were eaten or rotted or what.  I guess you are supposed to dig the bulb up and save for the next year if you want to make sure you have them – I just don’t know if I would remember to bother.   I tried hollyhocks from seed and never grew so thought I would try the roots.  I remember we always had then growing under one window when I grew up in Wisconsin.

More Progress

On Sunday I managed to get done with a little even though I started late in the afternoon.

The black sashing is added to Sunny Daze and now I am ready to make four more half Dresden Plates.  Then those will be glue basted to the borders.  The borders will not be sewn down until I get the stitching done.  The Half Dresden’s are just pinned to the wall right now  – the borders are pinned to the wall.  Colors are still due to change where they are on the wall – when I get the remaining made it will be easier to move.  Too much purple on the top.

IMG_7199

I know how the section goes for Noriko’s Star for the 3 rows that the flowers are in so I picked those up to do a little stitching while I had about 10 minutes or so to pass.

Quilting on New York Beauty from Saturday night –this block was finished

IMG_7184

A close up of the stitching on the blue – it blends in a lot so I know you can’t always see the stitching.

IMG_7185

I got started on the next block and using the swirls in the light pattern for quilting design in that area.

IMG_7186

The very top section of that block was worked on last night and then moved to the cross hatching

IMG_7187

I need to get the tomatoes planted this week – in a day or two I think, I have them on the porch getting used to the temperatures.  I also have four packages of bulbs – I think there is 2 or three in package and the same in the other two.  I plan to put them in from of the garden fence on the side that the gate is on.  I will grab a photo of the packages later I forgot today.

Sunny Daze

The Dresden quilt has finally made some progress.  The yellow block is done

IMG_7180

I decided to take it all off the wall and put a black sashing around the 9 inside blocks  – cut and ready to sew.  Then the newsprint borders will be put back up and the half plates glue basted in place and then will be appliqued on.  Borders then to sew onto to the body of the quilt and then another black sashing border.  I wish I had made the yellow whirly block a different shades of yellow and newsprint so it would fade out so much but you do see the design close up much better than from a distance.  And no I’m not changing it. That block is a lot of work.

IMG_7183

Pieces are ready to make the half plates, the tops of the blades are stitched, need to turn them out and press and then ready to sew and make the half circles for the middles. For my Slow Sunday Stitching I hope to be doing pressing and get these pieces ready for the machine work needed.  Also linking to Life in Pieces

This part quilted on The New York Beauty on Friday night

IMG_7181

A pretty variety of Greater Periwinkle (also known as Blue Periwinkle – it is a member of the Vinca family)   is so pretty with the purple blossoms

IMG_7182

Soon I will get back to Noriko’s Star hexagon quilt.  There are enough hexies thread basted for the next section but I am trying to get the applique done on the plates first so there will be a little longer of a break from them still.  It is really hard to do more than one hand stitching project at a time plus hand quilting.
