If anyone wants to read but you don’t have to, some indigenous groups of Borneo see the dragon and in fact the hornbill! as the underworld/upperworld female/male opposites, instead of the phoenix that is most famously paired with the dragon from Chinese myth. I really love both versions

It’s cool to me becuz. For the dragon-phoenix they’re both mythical, you can understand why they have this air of wonder and divinity to them. But the hornbill, particularly the rhino hornbill is a real bird you can see. Compared to the dragon that is a mythical symbol probably evolved from knowing serpents and lizards. And attaching to this bird a sacred importance by recognising it being part of the forest. Not dragons and phoenix that are far away where you can’t see them, but a real bird you see flying overhead, and you associate it to an upperworld. Such great stufff

By the wayy. If kiawe was more real. His name would be Keawe. Which means The thread/the bearer (symbolic of lineage). Just that I’m used to spelling it kiawe. But he would have an actual hawaiian name and especially not of an invasive tree 😭 but just like how I introduce myself as my chosen (informal) name wren becuz I like birds and it sounds like the yuan in my chinese name, he thinks it’s cool it sounds like the firewood they use. It’s invasive but it works well

Idk how to headcanon birthdays for characters that don’t canonically have one. I don’t want to assign Nov 11 to Kiawe just cuz that’s when pokemon sm debuted… And I remembered in 2023 I dreamt it was his birthday on Sept 22. And idk astrology but by Vibes alone virgo is one of the signs I’d likely assign him, and the date fits just nice. So my birthday headcanon for Kiawe is Sept 22 for now. I mean i don’t feel very passionately about it being 100% his bday but I have no other option for noww

It’s recently making me very happy imagining myself and Kiawe working on our own academia separately but telling each other our ideas becuz we’re curious to know about the other’s work.

I got accepted into environmental science & public policy (something like pol sci/int relations/policy) for my uni course and I’m excited to you know. Write actual theses and be surrounded by people who are doing research. (I start in August)
