Connor knew he had to make a choice, and he had to make a decision, and he hated all of the options in front of him. He could admit that none of them were particularly savory, but he had to pick and he had to act. He sorted through everything quickly, the situation laid out in neat boxes like a surgeon’s tools, and when he came to the end of the details, he called Detective Jay Halstead.
“Rhodes?” Jay asked.
“Yeah, hey, it’s me.”
“Why are you calling me? It’s — fuck, it’s almost midnight. What’s going on?”
“This is going to sound insane, but I need to see you tonight. I’d rather talk about this in person if you don’t mind.”
“Oh? You need to see me?”
“Don’t make a big thing of it, alright?”
“How could I possibly make a big thing of this? It’s just my ex calling me at midnight on a Friday asking to see me tonight without giving me a real reason for it except that he wants to talk about it in person,” Jay said, and that sarcastic, dry tone was familiar enough that Connor sighed heavily. “I’m sure nothing weird or awful will come of this.”
