SAT scores, success in the medical and law fields, and its basis for the Romance languages are often cited as valid justifications to study Latin (see theNCSSFL “Benefits of Latin Study”); but these reasons are devoid of any true meaning or purpose, and I cringe when I hear them, even if they do help bolster enrolment.

But their rather rapid spread has also led to some misunderstandings about what they are and how they can be used in a classroom, largely owing to the wide variety of gamified courses and GBL-based classroom activities that have been popularised by educational media. Rather than serve as a panacea to fix classroom problems, however, gamification and GBL should be considered as just one of many tools, albeit quite powerful ones grounded in cognitive psychology, which can be used to create engaging and dynamic learning environments. After a short introduction to the ideas behind gamification and GBL and the brain science that makes them so powerful, an example of a gamified middle-school level Latin course will be described in detail.

an open-source basis, OESIS commissioned a technology
partner (Providence Global Solutions) to host the software
and asked a panel of independent school eyes to examine
the contents, strategies, infrastructure and possibilities of
implementing MOOCs into their curricula. In this panel
discussion we bring to bear different perspectives on
these issues, including an examination of the technology
behind MOOC delivery, an examination of the different
MOOC types (cMOOC and xMOOC), the emerging views
of independent school staff and students, and the ways in
which MOOCs as either courses or classes can be adapted
to the underlying philosophies of the independent school
sector."

With Google’s Maps Engine, map creation is easy, and sharing them with a wider audience is even easier. In this session, we’ll practice making and sharing dynamic maps with Maps Engine by creating borders and pins with information that helps us to tell a story. We’ll then practice some methods to share our maps with each other and learn where to find other interesting public maps. Finally, we’ll learn how Google Maps complements Google Earth, which we will use to create dynamic narratives from our maps. Bring your computer and a sense of adventure!
