The Derinkuyu underground city was carved from soft volcanic rock by the Phrygians in the 8th–7th centuries BCE. Expanded by later civilizations, it featured ventilation shafts, wells, and passages for air and water supply.

The city was 13 stories deep and large enough to house up to 20,000 people, including their livestock and food supplies.
