Dr. Margaret Rhea Seddon was the first Tennessean in space. Born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee in 1947, she competed with over 8,000 applicants to become part of the first group of astronauts selected by NASA to include women, and was one of only six women accepted. She completed three successful space flights, the first on STS-51D (Discovery) in 1985. She also flew on two missions aboard the Columbia shuttle in 1991 and 1993. As a doctor, she studied how zero gravity affected the human body.
