This is a question I got asked and then there was no other way than to explain them the umbra, penumbra and where the eclipse falls and  how it happens.
 
🌞 On April 8, 2024, there will be a special event called a total solar eclipse. 

🌞 This means the Moon will move between the Earth and the Sun, casting its shadow on Earth’s surface. 

🌞 The shadow has two parts: the umbra, where it’s really dark because no sunlight can get through, and the penumbra, which is a bit lighter because only some sunlight can reach there.

🌞 If you’re in the umbra, it’s like the Sun is completely covered by the Moon, making it really dark - that’s called a total eclipse.

Earth science project. Lunar phases. This was my son's 6th grade project (before labeling). We used a black foam board, he painted the various size styrofoam balls (purchased from Walmart). Paint used was spray paint and acrylic paints. The sun's light was a flashlight inserted from the back (we hallowed out the center just big enough to push the flashlight in and almost to the front, but about an inch short and it illuminated the sun ball. Sun, Earth, and moons are attached with hot glue.
