The primary legend tells how a great bird carried the ancestral Navajo people from the far north to their current homeland in the American Southwest. This rock formation is sacred to the Navajos – hiking and/or climbing on the sacred peak or its surrounding rocks is forbidden. Driving onto the dirt road leading to the formation is only allowed with permitted Navajo guides.
