Pembroke College Oxford, Entrance Gateway, King James I, Samuel Johnson, Regents Park, Doctorate, College Park, The Rev, King James

Pembroke College was founded in 1624 by King James I, using in part the endowment of merchant Thomas Tesdale and funds from the Rev. Richard Wightwick. It was named after William Herbert, 3rd Earl of Pembroke. The room Dr Samuel Johnson occupied at Pembroke is on the second floor directly above the entrance gateway. Lack of funds forced him to leave Pembroke in 1729 without a degree, but in 1755 Oxford awarded him an M.A. and then in 1775 conferred on him an honorary doctorate.
