Windsor Ruins were added to the National Register of Historic Places on Nov. 23, 1971. Descendants of the Daniell family donated Windsor Ruins to the State of Mississippi in 1974. Today the site is administered by the Mississippi Dept. of Archives and History's Division of Historic Sites and Archaeology. We stopped on this rainy morning at the Windsor Ruins off of Hwy 552 in Mississippi for a detour off the Natchez Trace Parkway. Windsor was built by Smith Coffee Daniel II (he died a few weeks after completion in 1861). The Mansion burned in a fire in 1890, only 23 of the original 29 Columns still stand today. During the American Civil War, the home was used by both Union and Confederate troops. The Ruins have appeared in a couple of movies.
