The meeting focused on the identity formation of the group or groups represented in the Scrolls, explored issues of self-definition of Jewish groups in relation to, or in reaction towards other groups within Judaism ("sectarian" identity, inner-Jewish discourses and polemics), and inquired into the development of Jewish identity vis-a-vis other non-Jewish persons, groups or peoples as reflected in the Scrolls.

This volume contains a revised form of the contributions to an “experts meeting” held at the Catholic University of Leuven on December 2007 dedicated to explore the relationship among the two corpora and to understand both the commonalities and the differences between the two corpora from the perspective of the common ground from the Hebrew Bible.

The studies range from essays on the interpretation of the biblical texts in the Scrolls, to more general studies on topics such as priestly functions in a community without temple, Messianism, magic, wisdom, sonship between the Old and the New Testament, and the “other” in the Dead Sea Scrolls or at Qumran.

The third part of the book consists of surveys of the history of research on the Dead Sea Scrolls. The volume includes English translations of essays that were originally written in Spanish and French.

This evolution is made concrete in the use of the expression “new Covenant” in the Damascus Document, where the expression implies not only the “renewal” of the mosaic covenant prophesized by Jeremiah as applied to the group or groups behind the Damascus Document, but also a real “novelty”: the reduction of its meaning and the transfert of the covenant between God and Israel to those who freely decide to join the group and enter in the “new covenant” in order to faithfully observe of the “hidden things” of the Law of Moses which have been revealed to them and which are not observed by the rest of Israel.

The original classification show the pan-biblical and pan-essene understanding current in the fifties. But when all the texts have been published, these classification creates serious problems. A comparison of the organization of the material in Textos de Qumran, published in 1992, with the bilingual The Dead Sea Scrolls Study Edition of 2000 should allow to understand that giving a name or changing the name given to a composition can deeply influence the understanding of the work in question.
