Exstinctio maior specierum viventium, casus rarus in palaeontologia, e variis causis orta esse censetur, inter quas calefactione globali, vulcanismo, illisione meteoritae magnae. Animalium marinorum quinque exstinctiones maiores enumerantur:
- Ordovicia Siluria
- Devonia superior seu Frasnia-Famennia
- Permia Triassica
- Triassica Iurassica
- Cretacea Palaeogenica
