before I played Disco Elysium, I thought Harry du Bois was a co-worker in the precinct you work at and, reading about him being such a fucked up guy, I was literally planning on avoiding him as much as possible in my playthrough... colour me surprised when I found the badge and found out the main character's name
why is explaining a villains sad backstory always taken as an effort toward excusing their actions. why does the conversation need to involve the question of excusing anything rather than just making their present behavior way more interesting by complicating their feelings or their motivations. why is acknowledging complicated feelings or motivations taken as apologism in and of itself. why is everyone so incredibly boring
in the context of a piece of horror art, which fucks you up the most
1. visceral injury to a body part in a way you *could* experience
2. body horror (some physically impossible warping of the body)
3. abandonment by symbolic protective entity (god, gov, community, adults, etc.)
4. spiritual or religious abuse
5. failure to protect dependent & vulnerable others
6. unreality (being unclear what is real or not)
7. simple, intentional, interpersonal cruelty
8. mundane systemic violence
9. uncaring god/indifferent nature
10. realization of horror that already happened
