The increase in economic value, leisure, public health and tourism sector has created an opportunity to rethink the waterfront area. Sylhet city divided by the Surma River is an example of declining waterfront while there is hardly any public space for recreational benefit inside the whole city. Naturally, the river has divided the city into two parts lined with two different urban edges. This separation has identically changed the urban morphology in two banks. The recent global outbreak of highly contagious novel coronavirus disease has aroused public conc... more The recent global outbreak of highly contagious novel coronavirus disease has aroused public concern on environmental health and personal hygiene issues. The world has seen the rapid spread of transmission of this infectious disease within the built environment as well as outside. Each country is facing a tremendous challenge to get rid of this disease. Addressing this global concern, the primary objective of this paper is to instigate a discourse about the potential contribution of adaptive design of the built environment on public health specially in residential sector of Bangladesh. Also, this paper assesses a framework which will provide a guideline responding to pressing questions about future considerations labeled as 'The new normal' and it will be helpful for other scenarios as well. Methodologically this discussion is based on a framework, which is utilized for the analysis of existing current situation and is operationalized by identifying and mentioning design implications. Moreover, this paper originates insights for areas where future research will be critically needed through discussing some key issues. Finally, the paper concludes with an outlook that captures considerations regarding practice of public health in adaptive use of the surrounding built environment to mitigate the transmission risk of COVID-19.

As a qualitative research, the observation survey will be conducted to understand the physical condition of the study area. The research will conclude with the scope of strategic urban design guidelines to generate an economically enrich, socially logical and publicly vibrant urban waterfront.

Dhaka, a high-density city of the world where urban intervention is a challenge to moderate the h... more Dhaka, a high-density city of the world where urban intervention is a challenge to moderate the hazard associated with population density and lack of infrastructure. Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) is going to be another such urban intervention to ensure the transportation for mass people within a short period of time. Often, in developing countries these interventions negatively impact on people's behavior, separate neighborhood and create unused space. Currently, the city has its own system of transportation which is mainly more horizontally expanded. But, MRT, a vertically aligned transport system may change the morphology of the existing circulation system. So, the question arises what would be the image of the new transportation system based on MRT and how it will integrate with the existing circulation system and other elements of the urban structure. This paper explores the pre-study of a Metro station set in the context of Dhaka city where such transportation concept does not exist in full scale. The study examines the existing morphology of urban mobility to develop a framework while integrating MRT with existing mobility based on best practice and standard. An observation survey has been made on the case study area where the MRT station will be designed to identify the current situation of circulation system as walkways, surrounding land use, transit, and transport, people catchment area for transportation services, traffic and landscape of the area. The research will be concluded with a strategic plan including urban design and architectural exercise which will depict a comprehensive system of transportation and circulation of the case study area focusing on the integration of MRT station with current urban fabric.
