In doing so, it exploits, for the first time in this context, Proclus' distinctive interpretation of the myth of Er in In Rempublicam II. The central argument posits that the so-called pure and perfect souls (e.g., Pythagoras, Socrates, Plato) are tantamount to the highest theurgists as 'functional' angels-i.e., they function as angels when engaging in their highest activity. By drawing on Iamblichus, Proclus, and Hermias of Alexandria, the article thus delves into the profound synthesis of philosophy and revelation in Late Antiquity.

D., which has as its main figures the Neoplatonist Hermias and the Patriarch Cyril. After an analysis of the historical and philosophical context of the city of the Pharos, we will move on to sift through Hermias’ Commentary on Plato’s Phaedrus, so as to reveal how Cyril’s anti-subordinationist lexicon did penetrate into Hermias’ text. Indeed, Hermias makes use of the subordinationist formula, reprimanded by Cyril, in order to convey Socrates’ subordinate role to the gods. In this way, we will show, on the one hand, that Hermias cannot possibly be regarded as a mere spokesperson of Syrianus, as the vulgate states, and, on the other, that the figure of Socrates has been tailored on the model of Christ’s one in order to facilitate the integration between Christians and Pagans in Alexandria in the first half of the fifth century A. D.

We will take the case of Hermias' Commentary on Plato' Phaedrus (V AD) to demonstrate how Neoplatonists could conceive of a coherent epistemological system by integrating into Plato's διδασκαλία Stoic stance on articulation (διάρθρωσις) and Aristotelian doctrine of universals. We will notably show how a Neoplatonist could take Plato's words as hints to these non-Platonic theories so as to lay claim to them. It was not necessary for plato to plainly explain the articulation process or the role played in it by post res universals. He just hinted at them with fugacious words, whilst his exegete brought their deep meaning to the surface. This way, Neoplatonists managed to forge an organic epistemological system comprehensive of innate and latent knowledge, maieutic, articulation, and induction.

Notably, the exegesis of Plato’s Phaedrus plays a pivotal role in constructing this system, despite moving not from phrases of the dialogue, but simply from single words, like κυβερνήτης and ἡνίοχος. Iamblichus’ anathema against Plotinus’ psychology makes Socrates’ palinode the sacred text from which to elicit those formulae of orthodoxy bound to be devoutly recited by posterior Platonists, like Hermias of Alexandria. Indeed, in this text the divine Plato has revealed the essence of the triad νοερόν, νοητόν, κριτήριον, whose each element is susceptible of being dichotomized: νοερόν in νοῦς and ἕν, νοητόν in νοητόν and ἀκρότατα νοητά, κριτήριον in καθαρμός/φιλοσοφία and ἐνθουσιασμός/θεουργία. The result of this complex and fascinating move is an outstanding proof of philology and philosophy, psychology and epistemology hermeneutics and mysticism.
