[This review is for the 2024 remaster]
Not since the addition of the CGI musical interlude in Return of The Jedi has a movie faced such a severe downgrade, thanks almost exclusively to the lazy, misused technological advancement smothered all over it. Leiji Matsumoto's original technicolor wonderland is replaced with some of the worst generative AI upscaling I have ever seen. Every single scene is a mess of AI slop; faces morphing in strange ways, movements that make no sense, wide shots with no detail. There are literally fan-made, AI-produced remasters available for free on YouTube right now of equal - if not better - quality.
Gets a star because Daft Punk's 5-star album Discovery still fucking goes so hard. But honestly, this is one of the most disappointing cinema-going experiences I've had this year.
