Faraz Khan’s review published on Letterboxd:
This film is a big surprise, especially being released so close to the end of last year, but I can undoubtedly say this is the best-animated movie of 2022, hands down! It has the old Dreamworks tone with a new twist and animation style, incorporating the old Shrek style into a Spider-Verse look many times throughout the film, even switching to the use of twos during intense action scenes, delivering a visually stunning combination. The story pushes the film beyond what Dreamworks has done recently, as it gives a dark tale about Puss wanting to relieve his glory days as a "Legend" as he falls to his last life, similar to Shrek: Forever After, but told way better here through its main villain, Death. Death constantly looms over Puss and always watches over him throughout the story, waiting for the moment to finally take him on. It gets even scary and thrilling to the audience each time you hear his theme throughout the film; his whistle shivers you as it makes the hair on Puss stand up. It is the only one he fears. About villains, there are also two other groups, Goldilocks and The Three Bears and Jack Horner and his Baker's Dozen. Horner is a typical "wanting to rule the world" figure, with no care and no matter the cost type figure, while Goldi and the Bears are more like a family of thieves. The villains overall are portrayed beautifully through the constant Goldilocks joke that did get old. While it should sound like the villains are overstuffed, no one overstays their welcome, and each has a purpose in driving the story forward. The constant theme throughout this film is to live life to the fullest with those you care for. It succeeds in showing and doing that in this grand visual presentation ( I especially enjoyed how everyone had a different path to get to the Last Wish depending on their character, great concept.) Overall, old Dreamworks is back, and they are willing to blend the old with the new to tell their stories in significant risk-taking and unique ways. As the 6th entry into the Shrek series, the first in over a decade, and the opening to a new chapter ahead, this was a great start to a new era, and I can't wait to see what happens next.
