Jim Caddick’s review published on Letterboxd:
Take away the likeable Evans, enjoyable Weaving (with a terrible accent), brilliant effects, occasionally clever gags and the unique spin of Captain America being built from the ground up as an advertising symbol of WW2 recruitment rather than a super-soldier - and you’re left with an 80s action flick.....except without the cheese, without the bloodiness, paced weirdly slowly, and with a main character who’s far too unrealistically courageous and self-sacrificing to be believable or relatable.
The First Avenger is passable, but definitely feels like an establishing film designed to address the origins of Captain America, with nothing else really going for it.
