Ambulance

Ambulance

"I lose faith in this world on a daily basis. But not in you, though."

Michael Bay shows how to work under pressure and that he's still more than capable of filming explosive, tense shootouts with the "small scale" and self-referential 'Ambulance.' It's high-flying and packed with entertainment, impressively so considering it was filmed during the early days of the pandemic, giving a fair mixture of wild gunfights and lengthy police chases that do grow stale after an hour. His over-reliance on drone shots is one of the biggest weaknesses of the film, giving it a real amateur feel at times and getting very tiresome after a while. Still, the lead performances from Jake Gyllenhaal, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Eiza Gonzalez were great and the film ratchets up the stakes and possibilities as it chugs along.

It's not the most realistic adventure out there but this is the type of intimate action that I've been craving from Bay, rarely relying on CGI (though the few times he does, it's instantly noticeable and looks poor) and sticking to the type of intense, dramatic action that he's excelled in delivering over the decades. I hope these are the same types of films he continues to stick with because this is the Bay I've absolutely missed seeing on screen for a while now. It's nowhere near the best action film from him but it's certainly a push in the right direction and almost begins to make up for the garbage that is 'Six Underground.'
