Grand Theft Hamlet

Grand Theft Hamlet

The most ingenious film I've seen from last year, Grand Theft Hamlet is an exhilarating watch. Strange dreamlike surrealism collides with genuine hilarity and human emotion. Leaving the confines of the Vinewood Bowl amphitheatre allows this production of Hamlet to be made on such an epic scale and with so much possibility. The stresses of isolation and loneliness of lockdown runs parallel to Hamlet's own melancholic emotional state becoming all too relatable. Although set entirely in a video game world I have spent a lot of time in it still manages to show me original and unique imagery of the absurd. What a glorious and life affirming film.

I would genuinely love to see the full production to witness more of the perils they would have to overcome to pull off such a feat. There's no doubt GTA online has changed a lot since the two weeks of game time that I put into it but I still managed to see plenty of the absurd and hung out with people of all ages suffering the trolls and embracing the decency of other players. Perhaps my fondest memory was coming across two kids having a sincere online date who didn't accept my offer of making it a threesome as they went on the Ferris wheel and walked along the pier, something that wouldn't have been out of place in this film.
