  Pripyat is nothing more and nothing less than a place where life goes on, where survival is redefined with each passing day, and where the real danger might not be radiation, but the stories that dictate what survival is supposed to look like. If Bela Tarr ever turned his gaze to Pripyat maybe it would look something like this, there are times when it’s Satantango in all but name.

  A very typical movie by Nikolaus Geyrhalter, as he presents "the zone" surrounding the town Pripyat without any commentary. The life in this area, after the disaster at Chernobyl, looks like it is a recreation of the novel "Roadside Picnic".

  Tbh you could drop me smack dab in the middle of The Zone and I would thrive just like those cute old people. Drinking the water, riding the ferris wheel, eating radioactive fish and mushrooms. It has a certain relaxing atmosphere you can only find in a once thriving home to thousands that is now left decrepit and turning to dust by the passage of time. All I’m saying is that if I can’t see the radiation it won’t hurt me. I’m different. I would have simply just stopped Chernobyl from blowing up in the first place.

  Un petit trésor rare et bien caché. Comment vivre dans un lieu mort ? Comment des lieux morts sur une planète vivante peuvent-ils exister ? Cela semble être les questions qui taraudent Geyrhalter. 
  La caméra m’a rappelé le talent de Michel Brault et Pierre Perrault pour faire naître à nouveaux des hommes oubliés devant nos yeux.

  While it is fascinating and terrifying, it also suffers from its repetitive nature of letting the people talk about what they want as much as they want, so you keep getting the same information told to you multiple times and sometimes they trail off, but still, it's an engrossing watch. The black-and-white imagery also adds to the eerieness of it all, especially when Geyrhalter explores abandoned and contaminated buildings which look like they had all the life sucked out of them. I love his approach to documentarian filmmaking and if you're up for something slower, more atmospheric, I'd highly recommend it.

  Meticulously framed in long open-ended takes, a sad, sometimes humorous look at the workers and even the residents of Chernoybal's irradiated perimeter. Literally a ghostly (and dangerous) guided tour of the urban ruins and nuclear plant. Interviews recall life before the event.

  Into the zone for a roadside picnic with Nikolaus Geyrhalter, in his earlier direct cinema mode. Would make for a good double feature with his Homo Sapiens, released 17 years later: that film is about places without people, whereas Pripyat is about people without a place, the Chernobyl exclusion zone — in 1999, at least, before its recent tourism boom — home at once to those who want to leave but cannot, and those who were told to leave but came back. “I can tell you, there’s no life here." Most fascinating is the detailed guided tour of reactor no. 3 and its control room, right next door to the one which exploded in 1986, given by a worker who wants to start directing the film himself!
