JaySeaBee’s review published on Letterboxd:
My first foray into Kurosawa. I was never exactly bored while watching it, but it just plainly wasn’t for me. I can respect how influential of a piece it is and how incredibly groundbreaking the narrative structure and camera work was for the time, but I still didn’t really enjoy it.
Maybe I’m simply too antipathetic towards the type of over-the-top acting that is on display here from the likes of Toshiro Mifune’s character and others at times.
I enjoyed Ridley Scott’s take on this sort of narrative much more, with his 2021 film “The Last Duel”, which I’m now tempted to revisit.
At the very least, I now get this Simpsons reference:
*on a plane to Japan*
Marge: “Come on, Homer, Japan will be fun. You liked Rashomon.”
Homer: “That’s not how I remember it.”
