A movie that pushes the form further.
Very refreshing flick; the topic of indecisiveness, nihilism, how to confront (the bleak truths of) life in times of perfectionism in self-actualization, capitalistic work ethic and overstimulation could not have been more relevant. In many ways a very meditative and grounding movie. Especially the odd and in its core absurd theme of paying taxes juxtaposed to THE MEANING OF LIFE was a very well-thought nuance.
Also loved the quirkiness. Like, at times it legit feels like a South Park or Rick and Morty episode (sausage fingers, dildos, anal plugs, bagels, RATATOUILLE…).
Not only the contents but also the concept of a multiverse coupled with the quirky humor adequately capture the current zeitgeist IMO.
In terms of filmmaking this is astonishing. The action sequence are very, very well crafted and are entertaining as fuck (getting huge SCOTT PILGRIM/Edgar Wright vibes here!). Many inspiring usages of camera. Editing wise maybe a little too rushed and I’m not sure if I always liked the “comedic relief” through sausage fingers and ratatouille in very emotionally-tense moments, but it sort of fits the film’s vibe I guess.
Also love how the main characters - while their cultural background is often referenced - aren’t reduced to their ethnicity. They are just characters that happen to be of Asian heritage who play the protagonists in this thrilling action filled mindfuck arthouse film that’s NOT about their culture but instead about existentialism and what it means to be human.
One of the most stunning movie experiences I had in the last couple years.
Also: I just watched two stones talking about existential angst which felt as though it was edited on windows movie maker and it was the greatest thing lol
