roro’s review published on Letterboxd:
the dawn breaks and a city wakes, workers mingle in public transport while the lights of businesses all around blinker into colourful life. the petty chaos of city life, all swept away by the ocean, anytime you like. the buzz of a metropolis in full throttle, ready for the long day's journey into night. and then, it will all start again. such are the cycles of city life.
to surrender to All We Imagine As Light is to immerse oneself in Payal Kapadia's vision of Mumbai. there are so many shots that will stay with me for a long time. the colours, the performances, and the score, all graciously blend together to tell a relaxing and poignant story of working class women.
i don't think i have much to say that has not already been said. it’s one of the best Indian films to come out in the recent years. and it’s very deserving of its Cannes Grand Prix.
finally, All We Imagine As Light felt like a love letter to my city. it reminded me of home, just like the city she was from- full of people, bikes, rains, and the sea, that the place she lived in was beautiful too.
yet it’s so ironic, that this is the bombay we see everyday, yet the bombay we don’t quite see this way.
