Mann and co. were doing things with digital cameras that defied all reason. Scenes completely blown out, Jamie Fox at some point glowing pure white as the sun in his drug den pours in, the dynamic range completely ignored, playing with new technology just to see what you could do. But even with all that, the digital work in this film is far and away better than the washed out slop they're pumping through streaming services today. Give me imperfections, I don't care, but at least try to make something beautiful. Mann knows how to make something beautiful.
