Zarifa Balamedova’s review published on Letterboxd:
So, the only way for actresses to win an Oscar is by doing a sex scene & voilà instant award, because apparently that’s the only thing they’re valued for. By that logic, adult film actresses should be getting them too. I watched this purely out of curiosity, already expecting it to be disappointing, the only question was to what extent. Absolutely zero creativity, cinematography or plot. Everything was dull and boring. A 2 hour film about a twink & an escort girl. What a waste of time. The fact that this actually won an Oscar says a lot about how rigged the film industry is.
This actually made me appreciate The Substance more (because of the plot). The same industry that talks about the sexualization of women is awarding those who are doing EXACTLY THAT. How hypocritical. The only thing they care about is appealing to demoralized men. The real worth of women is nowhere to be found except in her private parts. The Substance was right. Sex sells.
EDIT: Those who felt triggered by this, go touch some grass. 🙏🏻🌳✨
Also, it’s pretty telling that the majority of people who liked this trash are men, huh? 😛
*One and a half star for Yura Borisov.
