Writer Permission Slip

Go as slowly as you need to in order to complete your writing project(s).

Prioritize other responsibilities if necessary. It’s okay.

Prioritize rest and self-care if necessary. It’s okay.

Re-write those 6k words you slaved over for weeks. It’s okay.

Slog through that boggy, swampy middle you always dread. It’s okay.

Writing fast is often glorified in the writing community. But some people just physically cannot do that for whatever reason. It’s perfectly okay to write slowly.

Writing tip #12: If your pacing feels too slow, it’s probably for one of these reasons:

  • the scene is too long
  • the scene is too wordy
  • too much description and inner monologue, not enough action
  • nothing is happening that pushes the plot forward

P.S. These little writing tips are re-posts from my Twitter account. Follow me there if you want to see more. xoxo

yeah.

If your character has a trait you consider one of their key features and it is never challenged in anyway, that trait will probably have about as much impact as their “tiny mole on their left buttcheek” trait.

For that trait NOT to fall totally flat, one or more of these things need to happen:

  • The trait exacerbates a situation in a bad way. (An extremely honest and trusting character reveals an important secret to the Big Bad’s lackey)
  • The character is given a choice to either act according to their traits or to subvert them. Often the subversion has the better outcome. They either maintain their trait and take a risk, or character development ensues. (A greedy character must escape. Leaving behind their riches goes against their very being, but it would allow them to escape easier. If they try to take some of their treasure with them, they do so at massive risk.)
  •  The character is put in an environment or must work with a person that opposes their trait. (An extremely tidy person must live in their slob cousin’s filthy apartment for a week. / The character has a debilitating fear of being alone and they are stranded on their own on an island.)
  • The character is put in a situation that requires them to suppress their trait (A hotheaded character needs to have polite discourse with someone they hate)

It’s also worth noting that it’s entirely possible to apply this same idea to positive traits that (for whatever reason) you don’t want your character to feel the need to change or suppress. One way to do this is by confronting the character with situations where they need to use this positive trait in ways they’ve either never consisted or are hesitant about, forcing them to learning to use the trait in different ways than they originally thought possible. (A character who is extremely compassionate to one particular group of people learns to also give the same amount of compassion to another group of people they originally thought undeserving.)

Masterlist (OUTDATED)

Hi! It has been brought to my attention that the links in my bio don’t uhh work on mobile. SO I decided to discontinue the masterlist page and put it all on a handy little pinned post, because those are a thing now I guess. (And I don’t want to have to keep up with two masterlists, that’s too much for my tiny brain)

So without further ado, under the cut you will find the children (now sorted alphabetically and by fandom!):

Yeah… ngl this is a weird one.

The Prompts Anonymous event paid another visit to the jv’s mlb minigames discord!! This is the second piece I wrote, based on some really cool art by @zazzlejazzle! Massive thanks to everyone who took part and helped organize it! Please go check out the other works from this event!

The fight was proving to be tougher than expected.

The heroes were tired, desperate, and running out of options. Chat Noir was hanging by one wrist on a floating, heart-shaped cuff, and Ladybug was shackled to a building with a similar contraption. Akumas were always weird, they were quirky; every time they’d have some strange weapon, device, or superpower that made everyone question their and Hawk Moth’s design choices: giant bubble containers, outlandish hairdos, odd-colored skin.

But this one was all about love.
