The fight was proving to be tougher than expected.

The heroes were tired, desperate, and running out of options. Chat Noir was hanging by one wrist on a floating, heart-shaped cuff, and Ladybug was shackled to a building with a similar contraption. Akumas were always weird, they were quirky; every time they’d have some strange weapon, device, or superpower that made everyone question their and Hawk Moth’s design choices: giant bubble containers, outlandish hairdos, odd-colored skin.

But this one was all about love.

By the time she finished gluing on the last rhinestone, Juleka was certain she was making a mistake. She held the item she had been working on for a couple of weeks now up against the light in her bedroom. It sparkled as the beam hit the stones at different angles, flashing pink and orange and white and purple. She had entertained the idea of changing it up for over a year now, and now that she had actually done it, she felt like throwing it as hard as she could, as far away from her as possible. She felt a primal urge to crush it or break it or hide it. She had effectively turned an item that gave her safety and eased her anxieties into something that would definitely heighten them. If she chose to wear it, that is.

I have also learned this is great for [PICK A COOL NAME FOR A SHIP] and [LOOK UP THE FACTS ABOUT OXYGEN LEVELS] and [WHAT’S THE WORD] and [DOUBLECHECK CHARACTER’S EYE COLOR] and ALL KINDS OF THINGS.

Anything that isn’t critical in the moment, and could be filled in later while I’m currently trying to burn through writing pages that will be lost if I don’t get them out right now? Brackets.

This is seriously the best advice, and it really helps put it into perspective that the first draft is just that- a draft. There’s no reason to agonize over a particularly tricky bit of writing when you could just leave it in brackets and skip to the good parts, the parts you’ve visualized. I also use brackets for [fact-check this], [use a stronger verb], [is this in character?] and other notes as I write, just so I don’t forget what I want to work on when I go back and edit.

It was a patrol like any other. Yato and Yukine regularly went out looking for ayakashi during the night, following their pledge to rid the world of their influence (as much as they could, at least).

The streets were almost always deserted at this time of the night. Most night-time deities had no business being out and about so, other than the occasional human, only the ayakashi roamed around; hence, perfect patrol time.

They never expected to run into another god; much less one whose sword was hilt-deep in a human’s chest.
