I conducted an exploratory qualitative case study on experiences of people who abuse alcohol in Wakivule village, Luwero district (Uganda).  This study sought to describe the effects of alcohol abuse on individual and their families, the attributions that are given for alcohol abuse and the ways in which people manage consequences of substance abuse.  The study uses constructivist narratives and the strengths perspective as theoretical bases. A total of 10 participants were individually interviewed in addition to conducting three key informant interviews and one focus group discussion.  Data was subjected to content analysis by way of coding and the identification of emerging themes. Findings indicate that the consequences of alcohol abuse include challenges at work, family conflict, financial problems, economic under development, marginalization and ill health. The attributed causes of alcohol abuse include physical pain, free will, divine fate, depression, socialization, availability and social injustice. The strategies for managing alcohol abuse include withdrawal from society, rationalization, political activism, self-control, medical and local remedies.  These findings show that experiences of alcohol abuse were multi-faceted, diverse, complex and non-linear. Consequently, a holistic understanding of alcohol abuse which gives credence to both medical and anthropological conceptualizations of substance abuse is required. More importantly, people who experience alcohol abuse should be given a voice and credence when studying this phenomenon and designing contextually relevant interventions.  In doing so, I call for a developmental social work approach to supporting people who abuse alcohol.

Purpose: To examine whether promiscuous Cre/LoxP recombination happens during gametogenesis in double transgenic mice carrying LoxP modified alleles and Cre transgene driven by tissue-specific promoter outside the gonads of adult mice. Methods: Cre driver mice were crossbred with reporter mouse lines (e.g., ZEG and Rosa26R) to obtain Cre/ZEG and Cre/Rosa26R double transgenic mice. The frequency of promiscuous LoxP/Cre recombination was determined by the expression of second reporter genes in the offspring of double transgenic mice. Results: The frequency of promiscuous LoxP/Cre recombination varied in different lines of Cre driver mice and in the sex of the same driver mice with higher penetrance in male than in female double transgenic mice. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and recombination analysis demonstrate that the recombination of floxed allele occurs during the transition from spermatogonia (diploid) to primary spermatocyte (tetraploid) in the testis. Thereby, target-floxed allele(s) may be ubiquitously ablated in experimental animals intended for tissue-specific gene deletion. Conclusions: Gametogenesis-associated recombination should always be examined in tissue-specific gene ablation studies.

Twenty-one fresh water samples were taken from reservoirs, wells and drinking water treatment plants in Taiwan for measurement of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/F) concentrations. Due to low concentration of PCDD/Fs, water samples (400-1000 L) were collected by using the on-site large volume pre-concentration system and analyzed by high resolution gas chromatography (HRGC)/high resolution mass spectrometer (HRMS). Different characteristics of dioxin profiles in surface water and groundwater are observed. The PCDD/F concentrations in fresh water samples varied from 0.001 to 0.265 pg WHO 98 -TEQ/L which are lower than the standard (12 pg WHO 98 -TEQ/L) set by the Taiwan Environmental Protection Administration (TEPA) for drinking water. Only a small fraction (<5%) of the total PCDD/F concentration in fresh water samples was water-soluble. As a result of their hydrophobicity, PCDD/Fs are effectively removed along with suspended solid via the water treatment process (average 98% removal efficiency).

The number of patients with Diabetes Mellitus (DM) more than tripled over the past 4 decades. Education can play a role in the improvement of adherence to medication regimens. Pharmacists could play a vital role in patient education. The study aims to determine the level of DM knowledge among pharmacists in the Basrah metropolitan area. A survey was conducted among hospital pharmacists in different hospitals in the area in the period between January 2019 and April 2019. A total of 50 pharmacists participated in this study. The knowledge test score mean was 16.96 and the standard deviation was 2.996. Ten of the pharmacists (20%) got good scores, 76% of the individuals (n=38) scored in the borderline region and only 2 participants (4%) obtained poor results. Most of the pharmacists had moderate knowledge about DM which warrants the need to apply continued medical and pharmaceutical education.
