Dr. José Delgado Rodrigues
My training is in Geology, from the University of Coimbra. I joined LNEC - National Laboratory of Civil Engineering, in 1967. Here I've acquired additional competences and training in Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology and have progressively moved from topics on weathering and weatherability of rocks used in geotechnical works towards topics on conservation of built heritage.
I've integrated the research career at LNEC where I got the degree of "Especialista", with a thesis on "Weatherability of rocks in Engineering Geology. Application to Portuguese situations".
During a certain period I had to acquire specific formation in Hydrogeology to help solving a problem associated to the extraction of lignite in central Portugal. I had then the opportunity to be taught by Prof. E. Montgomery (at the time professor at Flagstaff University) that I have the privilege to count as one of my good friends. Although I had to abandon this field, the knowledge then acquired has been of great help.
The involvement in studies on stone conservation progressively forced me to leave the other subjects and today it is the exclusive domain of my activity. For more than 40 years, I had the privilege to learn, to discuss and to work with many leading scientists in this field and to have many of them as my good friends.
I've started my international involvement in this area in the 1970s by participating in the well known RILEM Commission 25 PEM where we developed a series of standards specifically addressed to test stone for conservation purposes. From 1990s today, I could join several research projects integrated in consortia with many European countries.
I have been collaborating in conservation interventions in some of the major monuments in Portugal and have taught stone conservation matters in Portugal, and in several other countries around the world.
I am currently member of the editorial boards of several international journals.

on masonry architectural elements in archaeological sites in the Mediterranean Basin and to transform it into a useful IT tool.
PRODOMEA IT tool has been developed for selecting appropriate methodologies and tools to introduce compatibility in the conservation process and to assess the InCompatibility level as part of an integrated
conservation planning. The PRODOMEA IT tool can be reached through internet at PRODOMEA website (www.prodomea.com) and allows you to use the IT Tool in several ways: Knowledge Base, with different groups of documentation that constitutes the knowledge base of the PRODOMEA project, Casestudies, with a presentation of the conservation actions that were analyzed from the Compatibility point of view in the PRODOMEA archaeological sites. DSS– PRODOMEA decision support system: this is a tool to apply the new PRODOMEA approach for the assessment of the level of incompatibility of conservation treatments on masonry architectural assets.
