People have been very mean to Emily Wilson online lately. I’ve been on record as saying her translation of the Odyssey (or Iliad) wasn’t my favourite, but do I agree with the accusations of oversimplification or inaccuracy? (Spoiler alert: no.)

I lack perception of time so you could legit walk up to me and say "Hi" after 3 years and I'd be like "aww I missed you. we talked just last week :3"

Hey babe tell me your thoughts on chrysothemis

asha-dasha replied

CHRYSOTHEMIS‼️‼️‼️

she is so soooo fascinating and holds such potential for tragedy and i love her a lot and hold a lot of compassion for her

chrysothemis not really getting to know what clytemnestra was like before iphigenia’s death. she doesnt remember/never knew the woman her mother was. the only woman she knows is this biting, aggressive woman and like any child, she rationalizes it and thinks to herself that this is what every mother is like. where electra remembers, chrysothemis cant. she doesnt know agamemnon except through stories that have been filtered by her mother, that he was cruel and a murderer. that he shouldn’t have been a father. when electra tries to share other stories, she’s silenced. chrysothemis quickly learns that it’s better to just not wonder about her father.

chrysothemis looking much like iphigenia and sometimes clytemnestra will treat her like the beloved daughter she lost. chrysothemis plays along, anything for her mother to smile at her and kiss her cheeks and teach her old dances. chrysothemis getting to be a big sister to her step-siblings and adoring that role, especially when they started walking and being her best friends. her knowing how she feels about her step-siblings and not understanding why electra isnt like this with her. orestes may have been sent away when she was too young to really understand but if she does, she doesnt understand why he wasnt this protective of her.

chrysothemis reaching some sort of silent understanding with her stepfather, they arent close but she leaves him alone and he saves her from the biting remarks he makes about electra.

during the celebrations of her mother’s death, chrysothemis is silent. she keeps her step-siblings close, her siblings arent to be trusted to keep them safe. she finally understands how electra felt all those years ago when agamemnon was killed but instead of finding comfort and understanding in her sister’s arms, her sister is dancing freely for the first time in as long as she can remember. chrysothemis isnt angry with her, but she is angry all at the same.
