Visibility hiding
editWhen User:John F. Lewis changes the visibility of certain revisions, he uses "hide" as reason. Can you as a former oversighter tell whether this is according to policy here? Normally the reason tells the reason for hiding. --Pxos (talk) 09:46, 26 July 2014 (UTC)
- Hi, When I am deleting a revision, I will use a valid rationale for it. I use the rationale 'hide' in cases where putting the reason for deletion will attract unwanted attention and defeat the purpose of revision deletion. As you pointed here; I mostly do it prior to oversighting. It is within in policy to use ambiguous rationales for revision deletion on the grounds that specifically stating it will cause unnecessary attention and assuming it is a step between oversighting a revision. I'd appreciate if you came to me with concerns rather than poking others about the validity of my actions :) John F. Lewis (talk) 16:06, 26 July 2014 (UTC)
- We do not actually have policies on deletion and revision deletion, but doing this is widely accepted before requesting oversight. Otherwise, a more descriptive reason is used.--Jasper Deng (talk) 16:23, 26 July 2014 (UTC)
Merge-project requiring language skills
editDear Wikidatan,
Even though Wikidata phase 1 (replacing interlanguage by Wikidata) is officially finished, there are still a lot a duplicate items that should be merged. Projects to list possible duplicates (and therefore possibles mergers) have been started by users such as Pasleim with User:Pasleim/projectmerge and Ivan A. Krestinin with User:Ivan A. Krestinin/To merge. Those bot-generated lists do however contain quite some false positives and therefore still need a human eye to decide whether to merge or not.
Since you are an administrator on Wikidata with knowledge of the Finnish language, User:Ivan A. Krestinin/To merge/fiwiki might use your help. As said, it lists couples of WD items that might possibly be merged. If you are already involved in these projects or not interested, I am sincerely sorry for bothering you.
With kind regards, FakirNL (talk) 23:35, 27 July 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you for letting me know. I try to help as much as possible. --Stryn (talk) 16:13, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

editWikiProject Tennis
editThank you. I usually write for the WikiProject Tennis in it.wiki, in these days we talk about wikidata to use it for to update the singles and doubles ranking of a tennis player. We want to create a property in wikidata updated weekly by a bot.--Matlab1985 (talk) 20:12, 26 September 2014 (UTC)
- I now it. In this moment in it.wiki I'm updating the singles and doubles rankings with my bot, but I hope to use wikidata to insert this information automatically. I read about the Pfd about some properties so I'm waiting (with the it.wiki tennis project) the evolution about this deletions.--Matlab1985 (talk) 20:27, 26 September 2014 (UTC)
Plimsoll line
editHei!

Arbeit vs. Arbeid
editHi. I merged the wikidata for the disambugition pages for the Nordic languages Q11246075 no:Arbeid with the wikidata for German de:Arbeit. You reverted this with reference to Wikidata:WikiProject_Disambiguation_pages/guidelines#Links. I see that strictly speaking, the words are one letter apart from being written exactly the same way. However, this is the same word, the word arbeid in Norwegian is derived from the German word Arbeit, so I like to request this being merged. I am not so familiar with wikidata, how to put forward requests of this type, so if this the wrong place, I do apologize. Kind regards M14 (talk) 22:49, 3 December 2014 (UTC)
- Hello! The idea of this is that the words must be written exactly the same way. Because it might be that some day there will be disambiguation pages on the Norwegian Wikipedia or somewhere else for the both of those words; Arbeid and Arbeit. --Stryn (talk) 06:08, 4 December 2014 (UTC)
Addition of P641 to players' entries
editStryn, what is the point of adding sport (P641) → tennis (Q847) to all the tennis players' items when they already have occupation (P106) → tennis player (Q10833314)? Although I'm not 100% sure of Multichill's views, it appears from his answer to me a couple of days ago on his talk page (in this instance regarding football players) that this isn't necessary when P106 is already in use. I would be more inclined to use it on an item such as tennis ball (Q246514)... Jared Preston (talk) 19:37, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
- User:Inwind pointed out another interesting angle: How to deal with amateurs? Multichill (talk) 19:47, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
- Well, I added it because the property description says: "sport or discipline in which the entity participates or belongs to" and there were already many athletes using this property so I thought it's ok to add it. But I'll stop adding it now and will correct the entries where I added it after we really know how to use the property. I think that we should start a discussion at the property's talk page about that. I can't do it today (it's evening here), but if you could start the discussion, that would be great. Anyway, I pretty much agree with your view. --Stryn (talk) 19:49, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
- I've made a comment at Inwind's talk page. That may be or even should be addressed first, because whether or not we add sport (P641), I certainly don't think it's correct to be removing occupation (P106) at the same time. Noting here, some tennis players may or may not "make a living" out of their sport, but if you are at tournaments week in, week out, it would be hard to have any other profession anyway. However, I came here to discuss the addition of P641 – I just don't see it as being applicable, so yes, I guess I should go to the appropriate discussion page, otherwise people like Inwind could suggest that even changing "rower" or "tennis player" to simply "athlete (Q2066131)" would be incorrect, because the person may not even earn enough money to pay their rent through prize money or weekly wages (tennis player vs. footballer e.g.). (Then, and only then, would I support usage of sport (P641) → tennis (Q847), if occupation (P106) → athlete (Q2066131) – but that looks strange anyway...) As a tennis player, I don't think Serena Williams would have such problems, and tennis player (Q10833314) should definitely not be deleted from her item. Adding sport (P641) just seems wrong because the property is treated like a term, and less so a qualifier, as such. The two don't belong together, and I'm glad you agree, Stryn. Oh, and while I'm here, when do you think that the "prize money" (seems appropriate to ask this now, haha!) and the properties for singles & doubles tournament wins will be created? I've felt pretty impatient about that over the last few months! Jared Preston (talk) 22:04, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
- To the latter question (about prize money), see User_talk:Lydia_Pintscher_(WMDE)#Quantity_datatype_with_units. We already have the property for singles tournament wins, see Property:P1131, but only Rafael Nadal (Q10132) is using it! :O So... someone should start adding the property to other tennis players. And it seems that we don't have a property for doubles tournament wins yet, so someone need to propose it first at WD:PP. --Stryn (talk) 06:19, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
- Hyvää huomenta! Thanks for the links, in fact, I've just seen that not only do we have P1131 (P1131), but P1130 (P1130) too! My next question would be: for the ladies, I don't think it would be appropriate to lump WTA and ITF tournament victories together. Shouldn't we have a qualifier? I don't know how this would work, because we only have the one property, but something like P1131 (P1131) → ## → WTA Tour (Q2537906)? But what about ITF Women's Circuit (Q2701085)? This probably wasn't given any thought during creation, which is why it's only present at Rafael Nadal (Q10132). There's nothing there which tells us in this case that it's referring to the ATP Tour (Q300008). Jared Preston (talk) 06:59, 9 December 2014 (UTC)

Östsvenska
editDo you think it could be of any value to convince the developers to add an eastern version of Swedish to be added to labels and properties with monolingual text? I am thinking of those cases when the vocabulary have some differences, like maskinpistol? I am not saying that it is another language, but rather an alternative way to choose which words you prefer is certain situations. "Anstalt" instead of "Myndighet" was one thing that made me confused for example when I read some papers from VERO. I first had difficulties to understand why a prison would send my clients their papers, until I recognized the other meaning of the word. And the word "prestationsbetalarna" made my brain go hot for a few minutes before I understood what they meant. -- Innocent bystander (talk) 08:35, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
- Not a bad idea, I think. My Swedish sucks nowadays, but I remember that there really are some different words between "Swedish" speaken in Sweden and "Östvenska". There are some words that are different; for example Swedish cykel is cykel also here, but it can be also fillare or ped. --Stryn (talk) 08:46, 14 May 2015 (UTC)

Voitko auttaa wikidata-asiassa
editArtikkeli Wolf Hoffmann hyväksyttiin hyväksi artikkeliksi. Sain muut asiat tehtyä mutta en saanut merkattua wikidatassa hyväksi. Johtuneeko siitä, etten pystynyt kirjautumaan (Accept-Finland) 95.175.104.87 04:44, 11 July 2019 (UTC)
- Lisätty. Vain kirjautuneet käyttäjät pystyvät muokkaamaan noita laatutasoja. Mistähän johtui, ettet pystynyt kirjautumaan sisään? Systeemin pitäisi kirjata sinut automaattisesti sisään, kun tulet toisesta projektista Wikidataan. Stryn (talk) 06:00, 11 July 2019 (UTC)
- @Stryn Samaa olen ihmetellyt itsekin.

Stryn (talk) 06:13, 18 July 2019 (UTC)

Yhtye
editmoi, olit poistanut muutoksen. Kaksi samaa preflabelia eri tasoilla samassa hierarkiapuussa kuitenkin sekaannuttaa.
Stryn (talk) 16:44, 2 June 2020 (UTC)

- What makes you think that I'm interested? Stryn (talk) 19:33, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
Hey, I'm curious as to why Q16503 is protected. The reason you wrote in the log was "To disable the automated page-move-change-sitelink that happens twice in a month" but I'm curious what this refers to in particular. Thanks! Elli (talk) 05:19, 19 March 2021 (UTC)
- Because there are some strange wikis that moves their village pumps when they actually want to archive it. And then the sitelink is automatically changed on Wikidata to point to the archive page as you can see here for example. Stryn (talk) 06:05, 19 March 2021 (UTC)
- Odd. Thanks for the explanation! Elli (talk) 07:00, 19 March 2021 (UTC)

Call for participation in the interview study with Wikidata editors
editDear Stryn,
I hope you are doing good,
I am Kholoud, a researcher at King’s College London, and I work on a project as part of my PhD research that develops a personalized recommendation system to suggest Wikidata items for the editors based on their interests and preferences. I am collaborating on this project with Elena Simperl and Miaojing Shi.
I would love to talk with you to know about your current ways to choose the items you work on in Wikidata and understand the factors that might influence such a decision. Your cooperation will give us valuable insights into building a recommender system that can help improve your editing experience.
Participation is completely voluntary. You have the option to withdraw at any time. Your data will be processed under the terms of UK data protection law (including the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018). The information and data that you provide will remain confidential; it will only be stored on the password-protected computer of the researchers. We will use the results anonymized to provide insights into the practices of the editors in item selection processes for editing and publish the results of the study to a research venue. If you decide to take part, we will ask you to sign a consent form, and you will be given a copy of this consent form to keep.
If you’re interested in participating and have 15-20 minutes to chat (I promise to keep the time!), please either contact me at kholoudsaa@gmail.com or kholoud.alghamdi@kcl.ac.uk or use this form https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdmmFHaiB20nK14wrQJgfrA18PtmdagyeRib3xGtvzkdn3Lgw/viewform?usp=sf_link with your choice of the times that work for you.
I’ll follow up with you to figure out what method is the best way for us to connect.
Please contact me if you have any questions or require more information about this project.
Thank you for considering taking part in this research.
Regards
How we will see unregistered users
editHi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Lippuemojit mm. ovat kelpoja 🎌
editHei! Pyysitte olemaan käyttämättä emojeja. Valtiolippukuvakkeita käytetään kuvatiedoston muodossa tekstien lomassa jo nytkin. 85.76.82.167 09:20, 28 February 2022 (UTC)

On Wikidata:Database reports/Deleted Wikidata entities that are still linked I noticed you deleted Q11881866 even though it is linked from 5 items and fulfills a structural need. Consider undeletion. Dexxor (talk) 20:09, 25 September 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for the notice, I must have forgotten to check those. Need to be more careful next time, undeleted now. Stryn (talk) 05:28, 26 September 2023 (UTC)
