My teaching and research interests include a comparative theory of the humanities and social sciences, methodology of history, contemporary history and theory of historiography, ecological humanities, ecocide and genocide studies, and dead body studies.

This publication is the first English-language anthology of Jerzy Topolski’s texts. It was compiled ahead of the 23rd International Congress of Historical Sciences (Poznań, Poland 2020, postponed to 2022 because of the coronavirus pandemic). The volume contributes to ongoing discussions regarding the status of historical knowledge, history’s social engagement, the integration of the humanities and natural sciences, the relationships between events, facts and historical sources, questions relating to narration and historical truth, and the revival of interest in the analytical philosophy of history. As such, the anthology engages with debates on the geography of knowledge and it demonstrates how knowledge created outside Western Europe and the United States can inform the condition and development of historical theory.
This anthology outlines Topolski’s main areas of interest relating to theoretical and methodological aspects of historical knowledge. These ideas and theories include: understanding history as a social science; the notion of theoretical history; discussions of historians’ methodological consciousness; the theory of historical facts; declarative sentences as “a realistic alibi for historians;” the theory of non-source-based knowledge; issues of evaluation and assessment in the work of historians; the theory of historical narrative; historical explanation; and the paradox of historical truth.
The works published here emerged during various phases of Jerzy Topolski’s intellectual career, with the earliest pieces (written together with Andrzej Malewski) produced in the early 1960s, while the most recent texts are English-language versions of parts of Topolski’s final book, “Jak się pisze i rozumie historię. Tajemnice narracji historycznej” (How to Write and Understand History: The Secrets of Historical Narrative, 1996).
Hayden White z teorii literatury (Marek Wilczyński) i podejmują krytykę sposobu określania przez White’a podobieństwa narracji historycznej i dyskursu literackiego (Henryk Markiewicz); zarysowują także zbliżenie historii i literatury w XX wieku i wskazują na szczególną rolę, jaką w tym procesie odegrały analizowane przez White’a świadectwa Zagłady (Barłomiej Krupa).

White legitimized the changes that occurred after 1989 and opened up
young researchers in particular to the tendencies that were the subject of
intense discussions in Western Europe and the United States, such as
theories of the subject, power/knowledge relations, the end of history, the
critique of metanarratives, relations between history and literature, methodological eclecticism, inter-textuality and irony as explored within the framework of French theory, the critical theory of the Frankfurt School, poststructuralism,
constructivism, deconstruction and Lacanian psychoanalysis. White’s support for a plurality of interpretations and truths, alongside his constructivist approach to the creation of knowledge about the past, proved especially important and liberalizing in the wake of the Orange Revolution in Ukraine (2004–2005) since they resounded with the democratic changes taking place in the country.
Since the late 1990s, the humanities and social sciences have been undergoing a paradigm shift. This has been evidenced through various turns—empirical, ontological, scientific, material, towards things, and forensic—as well as in the naturalization of the humanities, evident in the growing popularity of life and earth sciences, and particularly in the new humanistic interest in biology, ecology, geography, and geology. The main emerging areas within the humanities stimulated by this shift include biohumanities, environmental or ecological humanities, and legal humanities. In the context of these reconfigurations, the concept of evidence, especially forensic evidence, has gained increasing importance. This article argues that the aforementioned turns are related to what could be termed an evidential turn in historical theory, which highlights the need for its careful observation and study. I argue that this turn has contributed to a more ontological and empirical approach to the pasts and realities intended to be studied through evidence. The aim of this chapter is to identify the advantages and disadvantages that the evidential turn presents for historical theory.

The academic career of Dipesh Chakrabarty leads from subalternity (here: the condition of being subordinate in the colonial and Eurocentric system of power and knowledge), through processes of emancipation reflected in the project of provincializing Europe, to planetarism (here: the understanding of humanity as a species inhabiting planet Earth and the engagement of humanists in discussions on climate change). Accordingly, Chakrabarty's work can be distinguished into three fundamental periods, symbolized by the imaginative figures of the subaltern, Europe, and the planet. These mark pivotal points in his intellectual biography, which I will attempt to outline here, situating it within the contemporary history of humanities and historiography, with special emphasis on the theory and history of historiography, a subdiscipline that is also the subject of research for the protagonist of this story.
ABSTRAKT. W artykule tym będę starała się wskazać, że inspiracje płynące z nauk o Ziemi, a szczególnie z gleboznawstwa, mogą w sposób istotny wpłynąć nie tylko na humanistyczne postrzeganie cmentarza jako pewnego zjawiska kulturowego, lecz także na rozumienie dziedzictwa jako takiego. Zastanowię się, w jaki sposób "środowiskowa historia grobów" może pomóc sproblematyzować problem dziedzictwa. Odwołując się do prowadzonych w ramach gleboznawstwa rozważań na temat gleb cmentarnych (nekrosoli) oraz do ujęć cmentarzy propagowanych przez geografów, zaproponuję wykorzystanie geosemiotyki i morfologii cmentarzy jako interesujących metod badań tej problematyki.
Since the late 1990s, there has been a transformation both of traditional understandings of the humanities as a field where humans as social beings are central and of the commonplace opposition of interpretative and experimental sciences. What is evident is a revival of discussions on the integration of the humanities and natural sciences. In this text, I offer an analysis of particular contexts in which the term “biohumanities” appears alongside an outline of selected cases where there has been a crossing of the biological and the social. My research here shows that the current “biological turn” in the humanities and social sciences is leading to fundamental transformation of understanding of the human, life, kinship, lineage and community, as well as of emotions, consciousness, and free will. In bringing about the integration of the humanities, social sciences, life sciences, and Earth sciences, biohumanities (alongside ecohumanities and geohumanities) often offers a way of transcending “cultural determinism”. The examples of complementary research presented here on the ontology of human remains and the environmental history of mass graves demonstrate that the monoculture of the humanities and social sciences often limits and indeed sometimes prevents the development of interesting research questions that would expand knowledge on particular phenomena. It can even leave certain questions out of bounds as it promotes hermeneutics as the fundamental mode of analysis.
