You’ve Gotta Do Something. Don’t You?

My apologies for the mess.

I recently got an on-campus job. During the interview process, I requested that I not be scheduled on Friday nights or Saturdays as I am a Jewish student.

My boss immeadiately brightened and rushed to explain - “Of course ! Of course! We want to accomodate you! We have another worker who takes off for Ramadan. Do you need to take off for Ramadan?”

I shook my head, incredibly confused. “Uh. That’s. Not my jurisdiction. I’m good.”

Boss nodded but was sure to add “Let me know if that ever changes. We can help you with Ramadan.”

@vangoggles THAT WHAT I WAS SAYING .

And I was finally on a shift with this guy. We were both sitting in silence because we had the ass-crack-of-dawn slot.

Over my coffee and twirling my Magen David necklace around my finger, I say “So. Ahmed. Ramadan.

And Ahmed over his energy drink, sighs - "don’t you say shit about that.”

#what’s the bet Ahmed was just asking for certain shifts during Ramadan and Boss got excited and was like “just take the whole ramadan off!”#“don’t even worry about it! we support you! take the time you need!”

I’m scheduled to work with him tomorrow morning so will find out then 🫡 .We’re both STEM majors who use the early empty hours to study so I will report if I get more than a grunt out of him about it.

another stupid-early morning, and between our respective course loads- him organic chemistry and me pathophysiology- I asked for the full story in how he got all of Ramadan off.

He sighed, and let me know that he did indeed try to explain to our manager that all he needed was to get shifts not around sunrise or sunset. But that in him explaining what Ramadan was, the plot very quickly got lost into this unhinged confusion where our boss was trying to google how people could survive an entire month without food or water.

So halfway through, he decided to pivot and go along with it, expecting less shifts in March because that’s a difficult academic time anyway. Then, he had to keep a straight face when the end-product was the entire time off with paid leave.

So, now, he’s in a hell partially of his own making where his boss genuinely believes he doesn’t eat for a month and is trying to offer all non-Christian workers March off.

I offered him time off for Hanukkah. He hit his head against the desk, and groaned.

I love your boss. Confused, but trying.

Crying and puking, Google maps made the Gulf of Mexico say Gulf of America

oh yeah, I sent in a ticket to report the incorrect info (which anyone can do.)

Here in the UK it is still labelled as ‘Gulf of Mexico’ with 'gulf of america’ in parenthesis underneath it.

The world at large does not recognise the 'gulf of america.’

This is because the US has no legal right to change the Gulf’s name under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

The naming conventions only extend 22KM from the shoreline. The rest is shared between the US, Mexico, and Cuba. This means only the land on America’s shores up to 22KM away from them can legally be called the 'gulf of america’, they cannot rename the whole thing to the rest of the world and call it a day.

Google changing the name does not make it the truth, it does not make it law… people lie on the internet all the time, and yes that includes google themselves.

Keep your messaging simple:

“Trump fired everyone in charge of airplane safety, and a week later planes started crashing into each other.”

That’s it. That’s the messaging. Don’t get bogged down disputing Trump’s false claims. Just blame him, in short and repeatable sentences.

  • Trump removed bird safety regulations in his first term and now bird flu is killing so many laying hens that eggs are $5 a carton
  • Trump removed food safety standards his first term and now we have recalls every few weeks
  • Trump cut the subsidies for the solar farms under construction so now electricity costs more
  • Trump disbanded the pandemic response team and we now we have bird flu and tuberculosis outbreaks

In case you aren’t familiar, Michael Scott Moore and David Rohde are both journalists. Moore was held by Somali pirates for 977 days. Rohde was held captive by the Taliban for 7 months after being abducted in Afghanistan.

The cruelty of racist white men.

Does anyone else remember when Elon was like “if anyone knows how to end world hunger for 6 billion USD, I’ll fund it” and UNICEF was like “we’re going to spend a month to make a plan to end world hunger for 6 billion USD and Elon is going to fund it” and Elon was like “actually, nah” and then bought Twitter instead?

I think that was one of the worst things I’ll ever see in my life.

I still think that should be the thing for which he’s the most famous. It should be brought up every time he’s mentioned. In any news article, any interview, any history book. “Elon Musk, who was offered a chance to end world hunger and turned it down.” Put it on his fucking gravestone.

if a surgeon says you have to fast, you have to fast. end of story.

if a surgeon says your child has to fast, they have to fast. even if they are rreeeaaaallly hungry. even if they beg for food. even if they cry. even if they throw a tantrum. even if they scream for hours.

if a surgeon says you have to fast, you have to fast.

For a bit more context/plainer language from a child life specialist:

the medicine the doctor gives you to make you sleep, called anesthesia, makes you sleep differently than you do at night. Medicine sleep is so deep that the muscle that keeps your stomach closed falls asleep too.

Your stomach and your lungs are connected by your esophagus, which connects to your mouth and brings air to your lungs and food into your stomach.

Because you’ll be laying flat on your back, This means if you have food in your stomach it can come up out of your stomach, and because they’re connected by your esophagus, food or drink that comes out of your stomach can go into your lungs.

Because they aren’t supposed to have stuff other than air in them, having food or drinks in your lungs can make you really sick.

The doctors really don’t want that to happen, which is why they ask you not to eat or drink anything the day you’re having your surgery/whatever you’re getting anesthesia for. It can be really hard but it’s important!

#my dyslexic ass read this as sturgeon at first and i thought this was about fish religionALT

everyone move over this post is about fish religion now

you’ve heard of Legal Eagle

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.

Fun fact: Pediatric surgeons usually do their cases by age, youngest to oldest, because the youngest patients, who can’t understand why they’re not allowed to eat, get to go first, to minimize their discomfort.

I want you to remember:

The fascists hate you too and they just will pretend otherwise until after they’ve killed the rest of us, before they turn on you.

Thanks to whoever tried, but I knew they’d never allow it.

Let’s do it the old fashioned way. Spread it far and wide.

The fact that you can’t raise taxes on billionaires even slightly without them pouring money into fascist political movements is, of itself, evidence that billionaires as a class shouldn’t be allowed to exist in the first place.

I’d just like to point out that every single thing that has happened in the 6 years since I created this post has only reinscribed its absolute moral correctness in my mind.
