Superprotect letter update

[edit]

Hi Chris troutman,

Along with more hundreds of others, you recently signed Letter to Wikimedia Foundation: Superprotect and Media Viewer, which I wrote.

Today, we have 562 signatures here on Meta, and another 61 on change.org, for a total of 623 signatures. Volunteers have fully translated it into 16 languages, and begun other translations. This far exceeds my most optimistic hopes about how many might sign the letter -- I would have been pleased to gain 200 siguatures -- but new signatures continue to come.

I believe this is a significant moment for Wikimedia and Wikipedia. Very rarely have I seen large numbers of people from multiple language and project communities speak with a unified voice. As I understand it, we are unified in a desire for the Wikimedia Foundation to respect -- in actions, in addition to words -- the will of the community who has built the Wikimedia projects for the benefit of all humanity. I strongly believe it is possible to innovate and improve our software tools, together with the Wikimedia Foundation. But substantial changes are necessary in order for us to work together smoothly and productively. I believe this letter identifies important actions that will strongly support those changes.

Have you been discussing these issues in your local community? If so, I think we would all appreciate an update (on the letter's talk page) about how those discussions have gone, and what people are saying. If not, please be bold and start a discussoin on your Village Pump, or in any other venue your project uses -- and then leave a summary of what kind of response you get on the letter's talk page.

Finally, what do you think is the right time, and the right way, to deliver this letter? We could set a date, or establish a threshold of signatures. I have some ideas, but am open to suggestions.

Thank you for your engagement on this issue, and please stay in touch. -Pete F (talk) 18:15, 26 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

@Peteforsyth: I discussed this with a WMF board member in an effort to make plain my dissatisfaction with Erik threatening to desysop you. Unless you expect a flood of new signatures, I recommend establishing an arbitrary date (such as 1 September) to deliver the open letter. As to how, I recommend closing the open letter discussion, marking it historical, and then notifying all WMF staff via talk pages with link to the letter. Survey on Inspire Campaign for addressing harassment

[edit]

Thanks for your participation during the Inspire Campaign focused on addressing harassment from June 2016. I'm interested in hearing your experience during the campaign, so if you're able, I invite you to complete this brief survey to describe how you contributed to the campaign and how you felt about participating.

Please feel free to let me know on my talk page if you have any questions about the campaign or the survey. Thanks! I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 03:23, 10 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Environmental impact

[edit]

Hi Chris, thank you for your revert. I really don't know how to react to this. He may have a point regarding this specific type of power source, but I don't really know how it plays into this project. --Gnom (talk) Let's make Wikipedia green! 10:05, 8 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Gnom: He left plenty of comments on the talk page so it's not as if there wasn't an opportunity to voice concerns. I remember years ago playing SimCity 2000 that the solar plants killed birds. I never paid it much mind. To the extent that some have an issue with it, it wouldn't hurt to add it as a proposal for WMF to consider which solar plants or wind farms it utilizes in an effort to become more renewable. As for me, I prefer nuclear energy but I'm not inclined to spend effort arguing about it. Chris Troutman (talk) 10:15, 8 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hi Chris, thank you for your comment. I have to admit I also used to be a friend of nuclear energy, but we need to bear in mind that SimCity did not adequately reflect the problem of long-term (read: very-very-long-term) storage of nuclear waste :-) --Gnom (talk) Let's make Wikipedia green! 10:36, 8 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Congratulations

[edit]

Hi Chris, congratulations on your decision to take over the reins of the Signpost! I've seen an account with your wp user name reading over at WPO, no idea if it's you or someone impersonating you. Still, I've written an open letter to you (as EiC) over there, since I know you followed the Sagecandor story a bit. May he be wished all the best for his quality improvement efforts. :)

ps: I hope the simplification of the editing process for the SP is going well. SashiRolls (talk) 13:58, 6 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

@SashiRolls: Yes, that account is me. I've been reading over there and only created an account to mute a particular contributor who regularly detracted from the conversation. I'm sorry to disappoint, but I am not the editor-in-charge, I'm just the publisher... which essentially means I just repeatedly press buttons to transclude the individual articles into the current format for publication and then mass-message the thing out. Other editors do the actual research, writing, and proofreading. I did, regardless, read your open letter. I actually know less about Sagecandor than you might assume, but I did peruse your appearances at AE. As you may or may not know, I have already been warned about my conduct in the past and I'm therefore not eager to take up your cause. Chris Troutman (talk) 02:59, 7 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
I'm aiming my message at the EiC role, not any individual person (that's why I didn't make you green). I obviously misread something somewhere (how embarrassing ^^)... I guess it's an editburo, or that Kudpung is still de facto EiC. My apologies for the mis-reading. I'll post a correction. And with regard to not wanting to take up my transparency clause, not to worry, I'll bet you're not alone. Thanks for your reply! SashiRolls (talk) 12:50, 7 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for reverting that rickroll. As that user pointed out, it's in the area of my userpage labelled "sandbox" that I invited people to edit in. It also says I would "clean it out periodically" which I can't do right now, so if you could revert it once again and remove it, and please thank that user for their contribution, I'd appreciate it. Or, if you want to leave it, that's ok too. Cheers, and good looking out. Andre (talk) 03:59, 24 March 2024 (UTC) Edit: looks like the bot took care of it. Nevermind. Thanks.
