I am currently working on the history of sexualities and things and on a book project on the emotionalization and politicization of humans, animals and human-animal relations in the 19th and 20th centuries.

It will deal, above all, with Donna Haraway’s manifold reflections on making kin with other animals and so-called human-animal symbionts, and ask how the history of the body may trouble animal studies and posthumanist speculations about future bodies – by decentering not only humans but other animals as well. Therefore, I will critically discuss her latest book "Staying with the Trouble. Making kin in the Chthulucene" in confrontation with Herbert George Wells’s science fiction "The Island of Doctor Moreau" and the concept of – what I would like to call – the Moreaucene

Pursuing Animal History as Body History, this paper focuses neither on animals nor on humans, but... more Pursuing Animal History as Body History, this paper focuses neither on animals nor on humans, but rather on bodies and the different societal demands made on them. It rejects the simple attribution of a history and an actor- or even subject-status to humans and animals per se. Instead, the paper suggests a historical problematization of the processes that produce humans or animals as having a history and as being actors or even subjects. Against this background, I try to demonstrate the usefulness of distinguishing between a praxeological approach in a broad sense on the one hand and a genealogical perspective in a narrow sense on the other. I thus understand Animal History less as an expanded form of Cultural History, but much more as a special form of Social History, placing at the center of interest neither the nature/culture dichotomy nor the concept of life, but rather the concept of the social.

The examination of emotion terms in German encyclopedias showed that, particularly from the mid-18th to early 20th centuries, ideas about human emotions were strongly influenced by ideas about animal emotions – or sensations – always threatening to destabilize them. The difference between emotion and sensation, which functioned to shore up the boundary between humans and animals, collapsed in the mid-19th century due to the advent of physiological research into emotion on the one hand and of evolutionary theory on the other. Emotions were then declared to be an important link connecting humans and (other) animals, notwithstanding its perils: Emotions threatened to turn humans into animals.

This chapter explores the meaning of empathy with animals within the emotional socialization of c... more This chapter explores the meaning of empathy with animals within the emotional socialization of children as it appears in children’s literature and advice manuals from the mid-nineteenth to the end of the twentieth century. Whether or not it was based on an anthropomorphisation of animals, this empathy was a historically invented empathy. In this context this chapter aims to pursue the link between feeling in general, and feeling with others in particular, thereby considering the changing interplay between emotional practices and moral demands. It reconstructs and reflects not only an emotionalization, but also a politicization of animals and human-animal relationships.

Das „Reich der Sinne“? Pornographie, Philosophie und die Brutalisierung der Sexualität (Westdeutschland 1968-1988)

English abstract: This article addresses a new kind of entanglement between visualized sexuality ... more English abstract: This article addresses a new kind of entanglement between visualized sexuality and sexualized violence within hard-core and especially soft-core pornography in the 1970s and 1980s. It reconstructs and contextualizes how sharply increasing violence against women within the pornography of this timeframe constituted a brutalization of sexuality. The article thereby analyzes what sort of concrete knowledge about violence practices, the imagined female body, and the propagated female self was offered by pornography around and after 1968. Against this background, it also tries to historicize and to better understand the feminist Anti-Pornography-Movement of the 1970s and 1980s, focusing on the harmed feelings of women who not only observed violence within pornography but experienced it themselves while observing it.

Ein fahles Halbdunkel umfängt die zehn Meter breite und fünf Meter tiefe Bühne. Um kleine Tische gruppiert blicken 200 Männer und Frauen gebannt auf eine Frau, die in einen Löwenkäfig steigt. Kurz bevor sie verschwindet, lässt sie ihren halb durchsichtigen Schleier fallen. Für einen kurzen Augenblick ist sie vollkommen nackt. Der Käfig verlässt die Bühne, das Publikum tobt. Die Scheinwerfer blenden auf, der Saal erstrahlt in vollem Glanz. Das Orchester spielt auf, zwei Jongleure betreten die Bühne. Der Auftritt Cellys -so das Pseudonym der Frau im Löwenkäfig -1925 im Alkazar in Hamburg-St. Pauli gilt als eine der ersten Stripteaseshows in Deutschland (Barth 1999, 58f.). St. Pauli ist seit der Jahrhundertwende das bekannteste Vergnügungsviertel Deutschlands und das Alkazar liegt mittendrin: Reeperbahn 110. »Alle 15 Minuten eine Sensation«, so lautet sein Leitspruch, von neun Uhr abends bis drei Uhr nachts. Die ersten Ausziehtänze finden nicht in Stripteaselokalen im engeren Sinn statt; diese entstehen in Deutschland erst nach Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs, wiederum auf St. Pauli. Das Alkazar ist ein Varieté. Trotz mancher Unterschiede steht das Stripteaselokal unverkennbar in dessen Tradition. Ein Stripteaselokal ist von außen weder einsehbar, noch ist es jedem zugänglich. Die Fenster sind abgedunkelt, der Eingang wird überwacht. Dieser Ort scheint ein Geheimnis zu hüten, ein Geheimnis, das nur Männern offenbart wird. Die Frau auf der Bühne verbirgt jedoch nichts, auch wenn sie sich »enthüllt« und ihr mehr oder weniger nackter Körper ein unverhohlenes Versprechen auf Sexualität zu geben scheint. Sexualität findet an diesem Ort nur bedingt statt, Sex wird lediglich simuliert. Tatsächlich ist das Stripteaselokal zuerst und zuletzt ein Lokal, eine Bar mit einer Bühne. Es wird zu Unrecht als ein Ort der Grenzüberschreitung imaginiert. Es ist vielmehr Ausdruck einer spezifisch modernen Verklärung von Sexualität.

English abstract: This introduction links the history of violence to the history of the body and ... more English abstract: This introduction links the history of violence to the history of the body and the history of the self. It emphasizes therefore not the phenomenology and situations but the genealogy and relations of violence, the power of violence to create very different relations between very different people. Therefore, the introduction sets out how a history of violence not only contributes to the history of the state but also shows how violence generated new discourses and practices of the self as well. Within this kind of history of violence, the body is, thus, not seen as a static target or given tool but as a historical product and in its changing productivity within relations of violence. Against this background the aim of this introduction is to promote the analysis of violence beyond war and mass murder -especially between the 1960s and 1980s.

This article calls for a connection between research in urban history and the history of the body... more This article calls for a connection between research in urban history and
the history of the body. The authors contend that while studies on the history of the body are often situated in cities, urban settings are rarely at the center of their analysis. In the same way, bodies are simultaneously a ubiquitous and understudied topic in urban history. Rather than exploring the effects of cities on bodies or the limits that bodies set for changes in cities, the article proposes a focus on the co-constitution of bodies and cities. This shift in perspective leads to paying attention to the various ways in which cities and bodies have shaped each other over time – through health policies and building codes to dance halls and sports clubs. The authors argue that such a perspective ultimately allows examining the specificity and relevance of the body polis for body politics in history.

Die Beiträge dieses Bandes fragen nach dem Wandel der Sexualität im deutschsprachigen Raum seit den 1960er Jahren. Anhand von Konzepten wie der Politisierung, Therapeutisierung und Normalisierung der Sexualität sowie der Frage nach ihrer Emotionalisierung, Somatisierung und Ausrichtung am »partnerschaftlichen« Beziehungsideal wird der Erkenntniswert einer an Prozessen orientierten zeithistorischen Forschung sowie der Wissens- und der Körpergeschichte geprüft. Indem die Beiträge den verschiedenen Facetten des »Sexualitätsdispositivs« seit den 1960er Jahren sowie deren teilweise weit zurückreichender Geschichte nachspüren, zielen sie darauf ab, die These von einer »Sexuellen Revolution« historisch und kritisch zu befragen.

Emotions are as old as humankind. But what do we know about them and what importance do we assign... more Emotions are as old as humankind. But what do we know about them and what importance do we assign to them? Emotional Lexicons is the first cultural history of terms of emotion found in German, French, and English language encyclopaedias since the late seventeenth century. This knowledge was (and still is) related to fundamental questions regarding the human condition: Are feelings of mental or physical nature? Can emotions be interpreted? Do animals have feelings? Are women more emotional than men? Are there children’s and grown-ups’ emotions? Is it possible to "civilize feelings"? Can emotions cause illnesses? Are groups capable of emotions? Can feelings bond or divide?

Sie versammelt innovative Studien, die mit kulturwissenschaftlichem Instrumentarium neue Perspektiven auf die Welt des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts erschließen: die vertrauten und fremden Seiten der Vergangenheit, die Genese der Moderne in ihrer Ambivalenz und Kontingenz. Als Symptome eines vehementen und rapiden Bedeutungsverlustes von Kirche und kirchengebundener Re... more Als Symptome eines vehementen und rapiden Bedeutungsverlustes von Kirche und kirchengebundener Religion in Deutschland wurden die zunehmenden Kirchenaustritte und gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen wie ansteigende Scheidungszahlen in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts gesehen. Der vorliegende Beitrag rekonstruiert dagegen die Diskurse der Zeit, um die Stellung der Kirche in der Gesellschaft kommunikationsgeschichtlich zu analysieren. Dabei werden zum einen die Politische Theologie und ihre zentralen Deutungsmuster, Leitbegriffe und Argumentationsweisen und daraus resultierende semantische Verschiebungen betrachtet. Zum anderen werden die historischen Bedingungen in den Blick genommen, unter denen die "Wende zur Welt" der Kirche zu einem gesellschaftlich relevanten Thema wurde. Die Präsenz des Themas in der damaligen Presse wird zu einem Beleg für die gesellschaftliche Relevanz von Kirche und Religion um 1968.

Au centre de cette réflexion se trouvent les travaux récents de Donna Haraway, Bruno Latour et Giorgio Agamben. Alors que les considérations de Haraway et Latour visent de manière program-matique à ne pas considérer les animaux seulement comme objets d'une histoire purement humaine mais comme sujets d'une histoire commune, Agamben se focalise plutôt sur un questionnement historique ou généalogique des distinctions dominantes entre humains et animaux. Ces perspectives théoriques qui peuvent être jointes et confrontées ouvrent des problématiques et des champs de recherches nouveaux non seulement pour l'histoire des animaux de lépoque contemporaine mais également pour la recherche historique dans son ensemble.

The sexual as well as the exotic are prominent markers of the unknown, of alterity, and of "exces... more The sexual as well as the exotic are prominent markers of the unknown, of alterity, and of "excess". These different dimensions of unfamiliarity often mutually intensify each other, for example when the racial Other is sexualized or when certain erotic practices are exoticized. Ideas about extra-European animalistic savagery testify to this, as do images of deviant sexual encounters happening in obscure and exciting settings. The dynamics of sexualizing the Other or of othering certain sexual practices can thereby unfold in discriminatory, idealizing, emancipatory or normalising registers. The intricate complexity of colonial intimacies around 1900, the sexualisation of non-white bodies in the 1920s entertainment business and the significance of faraway places for sexual experimentation in the 1970s demonstrate this. These examples hint at a long tradition of European longings for the primordial, unspoilt and uninhibited sexuality of supposedly uncivilized others, exposing the contradictions and the ambivalences of the Western civilizing project in interesting ways.
