The meaning of life can be summed up in paintings, photographs, musics, musings, theatre, dance, and a myriad mosaic of people just waiting to be.
Static was WILDLY popular in Brazil (a country where the population is over 50% black) and we had re-runs for YEARS on open television. Everyone who was a kid in the 2000s knew and loved him. As a result, every single Brazilian Con has a LOT of static cosplayers!
So, a couple of years ago, Comic Con Experience (the biggest con in Brazil, which is actually also the biggest con in the world!) invited Static’s creator Denys Cowan as one of the guests of honor.
Now. Thousands of people attend his panel. And cosplayers went NUTS because they could show their Static cosplay to the creator himself! What none of us expected was Debts Cowan’s reaction:
He cried on stage.
He had never seen Static cosplayers - especially not so many of them! And he had no idea the show was popular here! No one ever told him his character was so beloved! Years and years of reruns and he had no idea! He obviously created the character with his experiences and his community (Black North Americans) in mind. Still, he accidentally touched a whole other community of black people who could see themselves on the screen as a superhero!
Anyway he is a lovely person and one of the best, most memorable guests we had. And I think this is a nice reminder that your art might touch people you can’t even imagine would when creating it.
Basically, I don’t think there’s going to be an announcement that Tumblr is getting shut down. If the pattern we’re seeing holds, I don’t even think it’s going to happen intentionally. I think Tumblr is going to go out like an early 2000s forum: they’re just going to keep cutting the tech support budget until something goes wrong in a way that none of the remaining skeleton crew know how to repair, which could be tomorrow or three years from now. If it does happen, it’s probably going to happen completely at random, so there’s no point stressing out!
Shoutout to Vic Michealis for being the first person to ever score negative points on Game Changer. The only person to truly understand that the game is the players vs Sam and stick to that no matter the cost. The real winner, if you ask me.

We never really talked about it but The Ugly Ducking that grew up to be a beautiful swan was still probably pretty fugly from a duck’s perspective
Like that story isn’t about an ugly duckling that grew up sexy, it’s a fucking swan was judged as a duck and hated itself as a duck until it found out it wasn’t a duck and stopped trying to be a duck.
The actual ducks in the neighborhood were probably still looking around at perfectly normal swans like “damn, look at those busted ass ducks”
This is pretty important, actually. The good ending is finding the other swans, not tearing yourself to pieces trying to impress the ducks.
