Upon completing his diploma, RUSLAN ABDUL RAHIM earned his stripes in the Malaysian advertising industry during the mid 80s. A stint as the sole graphic designer at Proton’s Research & Development Department saw him finally pursuing and obtaining his Masters (MSc Communications c.1990-1991) at the renowned Pratt Institute, New York City, USA. It was here that he honed his skills in New Media encompassing Computer Graphics and Animation.
A shift in his academic outlook brought a deep commitment towards an exploration of design in the realm of the then burgeoning World Wide Web. This led him to embark on his doctoral research on interface design for dyslexia at the University of Brighton, East Sussex, United Kingdom till the new millennium. He was Dean at the Faculty of Art & Design, UniversitI Teknologi MARA(UiTM) before being appointed as the Rector of the National Academy of Arts, Culture & Heritage [ASWARA]
Presently, he is exploring into all things Metaverse and lecturing postgraduates at the Faculty of Creative Multimedia, Multimedia University.

Metaverse provides social spaces for netizens to undertake activities in an immersive environment... more Metaverse provides social spaces for netizens to undertake activities in an immersive environment either it be on Virtual Reality (VR) or simply through mobile or web-based medium, hence creating interactive gamified ways for audience, concurrently users, to interact and socialize within the metaverse realm. Existing research indicates that the metaverse is capable of supporting daily social activities, however is still in its infancy in general usage as compared to social media, notably gathering to see dying traditional performing arts such as Makyung (noun: [ma/.yung] alternative spelling: Mak Yong/Makyong). This study aims to investigate the issues and challenges associated with the practice and audience social gathering activities while observing Makyung in the metaverse. A cross-sectional study is conducted involving Malaysian cultural experts using a semi-structured interview. A thematic analysis is then carried out based on the focus group interview, and close-ended questionnaires are then transcribed verbatim. Findings showed that cultural experts resonated on the components of Arts Audience Experience Index which consisted of four components; (01) authenticity, (02) collective engagement, (03) knowledge, and (04) risk. Additionally, the data collection emphasised on performance authenticity; with a gap in sense of presence of the live performance aura ('angin') with collective engagement that may restrict translation of real time movement of actual human beings into representation of 3D avatar. Considering the challenges, the metaverse could be a beneficial instrument for spreading awareness and delivering cultural performing arts education. Therefore, future research will focus on designing social features for audiences to gather and interact socially in observing and conducting performing arts in the metaverse.

This paper outlined challenges in organisational adoption of AI demands systematic assessment of the fit and viability of software implementations in heterogeneous, concurrent, and integrated systems while accounting for the performance, efficiency, stability, and sustainability of the sector. In Malaysia, Kayans are of minority indigenous group and they are well known to have extensive tr... more In Malaysia, Kayans are of minority indigenous group and they are well known to have extensive traditional tattoos. Anthropologists credited the Kayans as the pioneer of exquisite tattoos from which other tribes in Borneo got inspirations for their own body art design and knowledge. This paper aims to address a two-pronged gap in studying Kayan tattoos. Presently, only the elderly have these body tattoos and they as the primary informants of the tradition are fading with time. Second, previous studies of the Kayan tattoos are more of descriptive nature of the designs and origin. Interviews were conducted among tattooed Kayan ladies to provide the researcher first-hand information about the meanings of their tattoos. The interviews were further supplemented with visual semiotics model from Pierce that overall aims to shed light on the Kayans' weltanschauung in the past.

This study examines the design elements of corporate brand characters or also called mascots of t... more This study examines the design elements of corporate brand characters or also called mascots of two prominent Malaysian financial institutions, Maybank and CIMB Bank. Generally mascots have been introduced in many organizations as representative. The presence of mascots can also be seen in the Malaysian banking sector. Hence three questions are posed; What forms does the bank mascots take?; How the bank mascots communicate corporate philosophy to consumer?; What meaning do the bank mascots convey? The findings of the study show that the sampled bank mascots display anthropomorphic features, which takes the form of human and animal. This characteristic can be specifically referred to another term called Zoomorphic. In addition to that, the mascots also display unique qualities that reflect company's identity and philosophy. In regards to meaning, it is noticed that the bank mascots suggest emotional expression that Malaysian consumers can easily relate to. We conclude that the two Malaysian bank mascots sampled in this study possess anthropomorphic characteristic which are important for marketing purpose and have the capabilities to represent the corporate banks and capture the attention of Malaysian consumers.

In addition to promoting products and services, communication media, especially TV commercials or... more In addition to promoting products and services, communication media, especially TV commercials or advertising, play an important role in the process of nation building. In fact, advertising, together with dramas and films, function as a catalyst to help develop and strengthen national unity of nations by conveying messages or narratives that highlight the importance of respecting and embracing the diverse cultures in Malaysia. Against this backdrop, the aim of this preliminary study is to examine the impact of solidarity-themed advertising of Petronas, (Malaysia's renowned oil and gas corporate entity) published in the mainstream media, on public's perception of social unity. The research method of this study consisted of a preliminary evaluation and an interview. The preliminary evaluation helped review relevant scenes and visuals from several advertisements, while the interview involving selected individuals helped determine the psychological impact of such media on them based on their personal background and level of knowledge. In addition, this study helped highlight the important visual attributes of communication media, notably TV commercials, in influencing local audience in accepting and embracing the cultural differences in Malaysia's diverse social landscape, which can help cement a strong bond among Malaysians of various socio-cultural backgrounds.

There are numerous subfields within visual communication, one of which is new media, alongside co... more There are numerous subfields within visual communication, one of which is new media, alongside conventional practices such as advertising, photography, the web, animation, and signage. Blogs, social media, video games, email and the pervasiveness of smartphones have all resulted in the emergence of new media that are inextricably linked to the internet and the online environment. since the first mobile game, "Tetris", in 1994 and "Snakes" in 1997, the visual element in mobile games has evolved significantly, culminating in the modern-day mobile gaming world. These changes have involved progress from the black and white images of the early games to the variety of colours used in game visuals today and the creation of virtual goods in-app games. A skin is one of these virtual goods or items and is synonymous with a virtual appearance, outfit or cosmetic item that can be used to modify and enhance the appearance of a player's avatar. This is a cosmetic item and purely aesthetic in nature, serving no functional purpose. Among players, the desire for a skin is undeniable. Apart from the "beauty factor," another hidden value is inherent in players' perceptions of their interactions with purely aesthetic items. To determine the attractiveness of the skin in mobile games, preliminary research on skin evaluation was conducted to ascertain players' perceptions of recent virtual skins they had used in-game. The purpose of the study was to identify players' perceptions of the attractiveness of the skin they used. To conduct the research, the Standard User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ) was used to determine the attractiveness of the skin as a virtual product. The UEQ is composed of six scales and twenty-six items that assess attractiveness on a hedonic and pragmatic level. Thirty respondents were chosen, and data analysis was performed using UEQ Data Analysis Tools. The product's benchmark was divided into five UX quality categories: excellent, good, above average, below average, and bad. The results indicate that stimulation is an excellent proxy for the UX quality of skin and efficiency is above average; meanwhile, attractiveness, perspicuity, dependability, and novelty were below average.

Penyelidikan ini merupakan satu kajian dimana tipografi atau huruf boleh berdiri dengan sendiri, ... more Penyelidikan ini merupakan satu kajian dimana tipografi atau huruf boleh berdiri dengan sendiri, bagaimana tipografi memainkan peranan yang besar di dalam seni visual terutamanya didalam pengiklanan yang dikeluarkan oleh surat khabar 'The Malay Mail'. Bagaimana seni tipografi berperanan didalam menyatakan atau meluahkan emosi dan psikologinya secara visual yang boleh dipaparkan didalam sesuatu pengiklanan, penyelidikan menjurus pengiklanan yang dikeluarkan semasa menyambut Aidilfitri. Tipografi membawa makna huruf yang telah di ekspirasikan, huruf-huruf ini merangkumi huruf A hingga Z, huruf besar dan juga huruf kecil termasuk dengan setnya sekali iaitu contoh koma, titik dan juga nombor. Tipografi merangkumi aspek dua dimensi dan juga tiga dimensi termasuk media cetak dan juga media digital. Mempelajarinya termasuk fundamentalnya terbahagi kepada bentuk, struktur, konten, message dan ekspirasi. Di dalam merekacipta huruf mestilah dipentingkan isu rentak, susunan barisan, keselarasan, jarak, positif, ruang negatif, illusi yang wujud di dalam ruang yang berlainan dari kenyataan (illusion of spatial depth to create illusion). Selain daripada itu amat dititikberatkan seni huruf itu, line, jarak yang boleh di baca dan keadaan yang boleh di baca (spacing to readability and legibility). Harus juga kita fahami bagaimana taip/huruf digunakan secara kreatif dan penuh dengan ekspresif. 4 Penyelidikan secara mendalam dilakukan terhadap taip and huruf untuk dijadikan sebagai bahan seni supaya boleh dikomersilkan. Pemilihan taip atau huruf untuk menghasilkan sesuatu penghasilan seni terutamanya susun letak reka corak sesebuah pengiklanan amat dititik beratkan, jikalau tidak hasil seninya tidak kesampaian kepada audien yang hendak ditujukan. Sesuatu mesej yang hendak disampaikan mestilah tepat agar membolehkan sesuatu objekif dapat dicapai didalam pengiklanan yang sewajarnya ingin di komersilkan.

The purpose of this study is to emphasize the sequence of mural paintings, in particular those related to elements in the design and types of murals corresponding to previous ones, and also to explore the background of murals based on previous mural paintings, originating with prehistoric cave paintings. Thus, understanding, recognizing and learning the context of past mural paintings can be as valuable as the present-day society. Moreover, the previous mural painting may be a perfect example and an inspiration for local artists to improve their ideas in terms of the style of application of the elements and the concept of mural painting. Thus, these mural paintings can be designed in a constructive manner and may provide both the artists and the universal society a strong and inspiring aesthetic value.

Devices like smart phones, tablets and personal computers have different types of specification in screen size, thus it would be difficult to design for each and every device. This will increase the cognitive load of the users end and will reduce the attention span of the users` visual perception in gathering the right information. This is a study on the new term which is known as responsive website design. The interface of the website is based on user centric design where ease-of-use is the top priority for the user. The prototype interface was conducted via experimental methodology where a group of users were asked to use the interface and answer a questionnaire adapted from Dr. Peter J Meyer's website usability checklist.

The context of the study involved a selection of photographs that contributes to stress therapeutic. The discussion examines the visual significance and understanding of images and the value of photographs. The study discusses the value of a photograph as visual communication in therapy, visual studies in photo-imagery practice, and also the robust value of visual sustainability toward photographs in therapy. As a result, the study found that family pictures positively impact participants as a platform to conduct Therapeutic Photography.

However, dedicated research on it has received little attention from researchers. This study discusses the use of press advertisement as a medium of communication to spread the message of National Day Celebration in Malaysia. This study, using advertisements that appear in Utusan Melayu / Malaysia in August and September commencing in 1957 until 2007. This study is a qualitative study using the method of document analysis. The visual evaluations will be applied in interview with an expert in advertising. The results show that there is a link between the visual framing of National Day advertisement with socioeconomic status, current political context, and the diversity of religious and racial communities. The implications of this study will provide a new discovery and documentation as a reference to the creative arts and design community and society.

The branches of visual communication literally sum up to all visuals as projection to every element of communication form. The study develops these vertical integrations into a powerful tool for viewers or creators to advocate the diversity of visual meaning metaphorically. Underneath this layer of understanding, the study researches the possible benefits of the phototherapeutic technique as an alternative therapeutic treatment for case study in Malaysia. The study focuses on analysing the trend of phototherapy as a visual meaning approach, and its benefit and prospects for Malaysia health departments. This study is narrowed into the source of understanding the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda THREE (3) on section non-communicable diseases and mental health, mainly discussing the national apprehension.

Moreover, most of previous studies focused on the categories and types of mobile applications but not specific on the consumers' perception (Heidi, 2014) Thus, the purpose of this study is to identify the users perception, use and usefulness of the mobile app that give a certain impact toward improving their practice toward basic Islamic principle as Muslim in Malaysia. Additionally, the user's perception as Muslim through this religion application had been examined through online survey by using The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) as variable to measure. As conclusion, this information is beneficial for academics for the development of future research in the field as to improved future propose mobile application toward our Muslim society in Malaysia.

The aim of this study was to examine issues of benefits (B), potential risks (PR), government sup... more The aim of this study was to examine issues of benefits (B), potential risks (PR), government support (GS) and attitude (AT) that influence the acceptance (AC) of nanotechnology in Malaysia. Respondent were selected based on purposive sampling and generally they represent the various social groups in the country (n=1207). The findings of the study provide a strong support of the relationships, which theorizes for the roles played by each determinant, either positively or negatively. Almost equal results were obtained to determine nanotechnology acceptance between benefits, potential risks and government support.

With the increasing availability of instructional animations on the internet, it can be beneficial to know how well-received instructional animations are designed. Hence, this explorative article focuses on a hybrid of directed and interpretive content analysis study of explicit design characteristics and visual representations of these animations. Assessing the Denotation and Connotation in Traditional Motifs of the Murut Ethnic Group

They are known to use symbolic motifs to decorate their handicraft and traditional attires. The denotative and connotative meanings have been adapted into the motifs based on their experience and environment. In the effort of preserving the motifs through application in both traditional and non-traditional medium, the message or theme visually communicated to the viewers through the motifs has to be carefully regarded to avoid misinterpretations. This study aims to evaluate the viewers’ comprehension of the denotation and connotation conveyed in select traditional Murut motifs. This study uses a mixed-method approach through the usage of unstructured interviews with elders and representatives of the Murut ethnic group; as well as questionnaires testing 55 individuals with backgrounds in art and design, of their comprehension of the denotative and connotative meanings of select Murut motifs. Through the interviews, the researchers concluded that the Murut community is, right now, focusing more on preserving the form of the motifs in its traditional medium with less focus on the denotative and connotative meanings. The results of the questionnaires suggested a more favourable recognition towards the anthropomorphic motifs compared to zoomorphic, phytomorphic and tool-based motifs.

The Malaysian government through its agency Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia has aggressively campaigned awareness regarding health issues through poster design. According to literature review, this medium of campaigning, which started a decade ago, places an emphasis on critical illnesses such as dengue fever, cancer, heart disease, and smoking. Despite this, based on the preliminary survey results, it is observable that there is no specific campaign that focuses on childhood obesity. Previous posters were all focused on obesity as a common problem. In this study, an exploratory study had been applied. A survey was carried out among young parents in Selangor. The findings show that 60.8 % of the respondents are not familiar with previous obesity campaigns [1, 2]. This can be concluded that educating the parents on a healthy lifestyle can prevent childhood obesity through posters in Malaysia and is an important and early preventive measure to take and should not be overlooked. It is hoped that the results of this study will assist the related government bodies and departments regarding the need for a communicable poster design in creating awareness about childhood obesity for the Malaysian public.
